For anyone who searches or is having similar problems, my stereo did this, and I found it was the wiring harness that went from the driver door througha harness (or tape) into the car. That had rubbed through the tape and frayed a wire out, shorting that speaker... and when that would happen the whole stereo would not make noise out any speaker.
