Default Changing from Amsoil to?? Need Advice.

The PO of my 944S2 ran Amsoil in it. It is time to change oil and I need advice on what to run. I live in Minnesota and the car will be stored unless we get a dry winter, even then it would only be used a few times.

What oil should I switch to? Mobile 1? Or should I go back to regular oil?

Also, what weight oil should I run?

Run the best oil you can afford. Preferably synthetic.

Porsche specs thinner oils when used at low temps, like below 20F. Check your manual. Then there's the issue of "new specs" that allow thinner oil all the time because oils are better today. I think that's fine for new and well-maintained low,low mileage examples. If you've got 100k miles or more, stick to the thick stuff.

If it's going to be garaged and not driven, it doesn't matter what weight the oil is. The usual spec is 20w50.

Why not stick with Amsoil?

Amsoil is one of the best synthetics out there. If you can possibly afford it, it's the way to go.

I switched to Royal Purple for oil and transmission lube in my 928.

Amsoil has this checkered history of never going (paying) for the certifying tests. But a lot of people like it.

I usually go with Mobil 1, 0W-40 for winter on a turbo. While global warming has seemed to hit MN and not drop temps down too low anymore, you do not want very heavy oil if the car is in -20F, or lower, for 8 hours. You may never get it turning over without a charcoal grill under the oil pan.

David,
check this link it may help you;

http://www.landsharkoz.com/techtips.htm

Check under "Lubricants for the 928"

Despite what some people may believe no "magic" oils exist and as long as Porsche's minimum oil spec is met all will be well. Read the current "Oil Pressure" thread here for more information

Regards
Doug

Amsoil. Best there is.

That's what both of mine are getting from here on out. As alternatives, I'd say Red Line, Royal Purple, and Mobil-1 are also good products, but I've heard more people absolutely SWEAR by Amsoil than any of those other brands. That says something to me.

I used to swear by Amsoil, until the local shop I bought it from went belly up, then I switched to Mobil 1, however now partsource carries it, so I'm going back!
