3.0L turbo?

3.0L turbo?
Has this ever been done? I was daydreaming at work again yesterday wondering what new and insane things I can waste my money on and thought - hey! I think the 3.0L 968 engine is basically the same size as the 2.5L one. I wonder if my Callaway kit could be adapted to fit a 3.0L engine and then I could drop that whole mess into my 944 n/a someday! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
Has anyone done anything like this before? I imagine the dyno numbers would be downright scary.

There was one in a panorama, or excellence magazine last year that the guy built a 3.0 block with the S2 head and turbo charged it. Ported polished custom cams and was getting 600 hp on a wide body 944.

Has been done numerous times. There are probably 4-5 conversions on here and a host more at 968.net

Yeah, do a search on big bore or stroker. There are guys running 2.6, 2.8, 3.0 and 3.1. There are a number of different ways to do it, some 8v and some 16v. You can achieve some pretty insane power numbers but you can also achieve one helluva bankruptcy filing as well.

Nope, these were designed by Callaway Engineering in the early 1980s specifically for the early 944s. There were 32 of them produced; Callaway discontinued offering the conversion package in 1986 when Porsche rolled out the 944T (951). Apparently Porsche figured out what Callaway did - that the 944 2.5L engine could produce a LOT of power with forced induction. There's some interesting information on them I have bookmarked and I'll try to post when I get home tonight.
The Callaway conversion uses a custom exhaust manifold with the turbocharger "hung" right off the bottom of it. The turbo itself is an IHI-6 unit. The "kit" includes (included) all the air piping, an intercooler, a Callaway-designed "microcontroller" - basically a very early electronic controlled fuel metering device, and a new plenum incorporating a "fifth injector" to prevent lean conditions by adding fuel as necessary via the controller to the charge right before it enters the intake.
I got DAMN lucky to find one - the kit I have has everything except the Callaway microcontroller (it has a MF2 mappable one) and the pistons. The conversion originally included replacement of the stock 9.2:1 compression 944 pistons to Callaway-engineered 8.0:1 pistons in order to prevent over-stressing the cylinders and head. Since these are not available anymore I'm just using 951 pistons for my project (since they're also 8.0:1 compression, original Porsche parts, forged, and readily available). The intake plenum where the fifth injector mounts and the controller and boost gauge obtain their reading also has a mounting for a sixth injector, which I will likely use for a water injection system.
All-in-all I am looking at obtaining about 300 RWHP with this setup, reliably. I hope to have the car at 944fest either this coming summer (10 months from now) or possibly the year after if expenses put me on a more restrictive timetable. Ultimately I'd LOVE to mate up a 968 engine & transmission on this car, add the turbo system and tune it. I'd probably have the most insanely fast early 944 in the world at that point! (That's daydreaming a bit though. . .)
I'll eventually be putting a web site up about the car, the Callaway kit, the conversion process, etc. I'll post it all over Rennlist when I get it done (if I ever get off my butt and finish it).

I knew there were a few (very few) made by Porsche, but obviously these would be cost-prohibitive. I was wondering if anyone had done the conversion themself either with an aftermarket forced-induction kit or a retrofit to a 951 using all the 951 turbo plumbing (would it all fit?)

I can see how would could pass it up if you dont visit the 951 forum. That kind of stuff isnt usually discussed here.

Wasn't aware of that, but it makes sense. I've been told there were production 951s as early as 1985 but in Europe only, but I've never had that confirmed or seen a picture of one. I imagine such a car would be extremely rare & valuable - an early 951 drivetrain with the early interior. . .
I'll check out those leads, they sound like very cool projects.
