Question Snow tires...what kind?

As the title says what kind of snow tires are best? I'm going to be driving a lot this winter and really need them. I really don't have much money so whats the best bang for my buck? Thanks!!

My dad has used Blizzaks and Nokian Hakkapeliita's. He actually liked the nikian's better. Matt H shoudl chime in here soon with an answer though. You may want a Carrera 4 to go with that

Oh yeah baby! So much fun.
Should you be worried about the salt and corrosion, or does the galvanization remove that worry?

I wouldn't bother with anything else than Nokian.

Depends on the driving conditions.

For US roads the Blizzak is generally better suited as we dont see accumulated snow, outside of the NorthEast. You cant go wrong with either the Blizzak or the Nokian and as BS owns a portion of Nokian, it doesnt make a difference.

There have also been decent reviews of the Dunlop Winter Sport, and Yokohama IG10/IG721, however snow tires are something I have very limited driving time with so I can only report what I have seen in testing at published sites.

I run Canadian Tire winter tires. I recall reading a review that they were actually made by one of the companies listed above. I believe it was Bridgestone. I've been very impressed, and they were around $350CDN for the set.

I run Hankook W404 studless on my Subaru. These are meant to compete with the Blizzaks (T rated, so you can still do hwy speeds) but are much cheaper. These made an incredible difference for me. I was able to go through 14" snow in a car with only 5" ground clearance. I don't have a Porsche yet, but these tires definitely work well for me. I run 205 55 16 on 7.5" wide wheels. They were $95 a piece at discount tire.

I ran Blizzaks on my 944 for a few years (on the 15" phonedials) and that car would climb trees! I did not experience much wear in the car either (daily driver, snows placed on when the temp stayed below freezing - say, late October or so).

I have WinterSports to try out on the 968 this year. Report yet to come...

I have Dunlop Winter Sports for my GTI. They SUCK on dry pavement. It got annoying when there was really no snow for a while. In snow, they are unbelievable. I could drive in 4" of snow like it was dry pavement. My acceleration and braking felt great, and handling was solid and secure. My car weighs the same, and is very similar in dimensions to the S2. With 50/50 weight distribution, i bet they work well on the 944s too.

Steph, Tire Rack is a great place to buy winter tires, they carry all sorts of name brands and they are pretty knowledgable. www.tirerack.com You will probably want a 195/65/15 because, when it comes to snow tires, wider isnt better.

Naturally I am going to plug Nokian and Hakkapeliitta (I sell them). I have used and raced on just about everything out there (Pirelli, Michelin, Bridgestone (Blizzak), and Hakka).

There are plenty of good winter tires available and at reasonable prices. As already mentioned, check out Tire Rack. They have a good selection of brands to choose from and for the most part they are reasonably knowledgeable.

My personal needs are very specialized so I do not compromise. The best ice tire I have found is made by Nokian (the Hakka Q - now superseded by the RSi). The other excellent offerings from Nokian include the Hakka 2 (the best all around winter tire) and the Nokian WR (a true all-weather tire). The WR is an excellent choice for those mid climate areas that do not receive significant snow falls or the season is short.

Find out more about Hakkapeliitta and Nokian at: www.nokiantires.com

Scott, she said bang for buck and while I, too, think the Nokians are great, they arent cheap in the US (in general).

The other issue, no one mentioned (except Blue S2 and only briefly) is that snow tires are horrid when it is not real cold or snowy.
