Default 944/968 conv start problem

Well, I have somewhat finished my S3 conversion, I just have a couple problems when I go to start.

When I turn the key to start, the engine will turn, but the fuel pump wont. I bench checked the pump, and it works just fine. I jumped pin #4 (to the fuel pump) and it works. It just doesn’t work throughout the start sequence. I ~think~ the fuel relay might be different for the 968......

Also, I don’t have a spark! I read +12 volts to the coil, but no spark out of the plug. I have 2 coils sitting around, and we tested both of them. Any suggestions??

How does the alarm system on the 968 work? What does it cut out when the alarm is armed (or in this case, not even installed). I have 12 volts from the ignition (from position 2 on the ignition switch) going to pin #7 on the passenger DME, which is the alarm system. If I disconnect this lead, absolutely nothing changes..... so I’m wondering if I bypassed the alarm incorrectly.

Thanks!!!

Jared

this one has been covered many times. the details are time consuming to write down, so do a search. you will find many topics on this one. todd holyoak has a page for the wiring diagrams for the conversions. you can find that page in the searched pages. if you still can't find what your looking for let me know

i'm 99% certain it is the DME relay which is stopping you. basically it works like this: the dme relay when activated supplies power to the fuel pump, and second to the DME/spark sequence. because when you turn your car on, you don't hear the fuel pump running because your DME relay is not being turned on. try taking the relay out and using the bypass method (do a search for DME relay bypass, it is a 3 prong wire you will need to make). if you make the bypass wire and turn the car ingintion on, and if you hear the fuel pump running you know you are one step closer. it should mean you will also get spark and the car will start, but sometimes that is not always the case (but usually the problems are traced back to the same thing). start by making the DME relay bypass, bypass it, and report back if you can hear the pump and or if the car will start.

I noticed you told Matt Odle to ground pin 5 with a "T" on the brake boost connection. I didnt do this, I only connected the two wires. Do you think I should?

Thanks!!

Yes, the fuel pump will run when I bridge 30/87/87b, but there is still no spark (I believe). The pump will run even when the key is out of the ignition.

Ok..... The chassis is an '83 944. The engine I installed is a 1994 968, and I have no alarm system, since there isnt any hookups for one. I sent +12 volts to pin #7 near the DME, which (from what I understand from the wiring chart) should disable the alarm.

alright this is going to be really weird and i hope you know how to use a multi meter (p.s. i am keeping this online for people in the future who want to know how to do this): alright, i don't know how similiar the 968 dme is to the older 944 dme but i am guessing they are a bit different. i need you to check a few things for me in order to give you the proper way to wire this. first of all, your 83 diagram does indeed show a different DME then the later 944's and 968. this means that your ignition is not turned on by the DME like the laters. the ignition shows that it is operated directly from pin 1 of the DME to the coil. take the multimeter or ohmmeter and measure the resistance from pin 1 on your DME to your coil. on the coil it is "pin 1" and should be green. i'm guessing there is only one wire going to the coil other then power directly from the battery. if you see continuity then your golden. i'm guessing your not going to see it, and we will have to fix that. let me review the newer diagrams one sec.
