The weight distribution is pretty close to a 944. The engine is mostly behind the front axles and the transmission is at the rear, just like the 928/944 it copied.

Uh, you're forgetting the frame is steel.

If you drive it like you're driving Miss Daisy, the mechanicals are pretty reliable. The electrics are not. The C4 in varying years had some pretty bad problems when it comes to the electrical system. If you drive it hard, like on the track, and don't modify accordingly for longevity, they break. The good news is it's cheaper to fix than a Porsche. I was going to buy one for a track *****, but some friends that know a lot more about C4's than I do, put me straight.

Is that true with the C4, I thought the transaxle came along with the C5 in 1997.

Between people here, and the people i know personally that have seriously wrecked Porsches and walked away untouched, i'll take my chances! Porsche has always pushed heavily on occupant safety! I dont care if the car disappears from under me as long as I walk out! Apparently, our torque tube is also a safety feature ive read? Transfers impact engery from one side to the other hopefully bypassing the transfer into the cabin? (from a head on or read end) Or something like that. Im sure some else can clarify.

I was looking at late 80s/early 90s vettes a little while before buying my S2. I liked them til i drove one! Ok, it totally felt planted the big rears were neat to be pushing you...but it just ... it was raw. It just didnt feel good. First time i sat in a 944 i knew it was a whole different world!

You're forgetting that Corvettes are Unit Body construction.

Either way they are safe, just built like the American junk they are. The 1996 LT-4 that my roomate had spent more time at the dealer for repairs than my 1985 944 spent broken.

Intake manifold gaskets 3 times, seats not functioning at least 5 times, check engine light on constantly, etc. Nevermind that you have to remove body panels to install a battery

What's the matter with plastic? I thought people got over the anti-plastic thing back in the 70s. Except maybe in steel towns.

The C5 and C6 Vettes are great cars, I have spent alot of time behind the wheel of C5's and recently put about 1500 miles on a C6. They are awesome cars at what I think is a bargain price.
They still need better interiors and seats and for gawds sake does the steering wheel HAVE to be that big?

I was never a fan of the C4 Vette, Build quality was lacking to say the least.
Just my .00911 cents

You have that wrong. The 1964 Pontiac Tempest made by GM copied the 1976 924 with the transmission at the rear. Also I car from the early 50s i believe that had nothing to do with Germany or Porsche copied the 924s front engine rear transmission layout. Rah Rah Go Porsche Go! I love Porsche chearleaders!

If you people knew me a little better you would understand that i'm a little different then most people. RZ350 is not for begineer riders. I know this. It scares me still to this day but I can't wait til after winter. Thats another story. But the vette's I hate them. Everyone in america is always like america does have a real sports car "The Corvette." Its alright but still the interior is plastic, and the body is fiberglass. Sorry I always thought that fiberglass was plastic because of the construction that it has.

Why is it that the plastic in the Chevy that doesn't crack in the sun is considered cheap but the plastic on the dash in the 944s that cracks in the sun is considered high quality?

I would take the cheap plastic dashboard in my POS because it is American Z28 over the about to crack high quality German engineered dash in my 944 any day.

I wonder if the cheaply made mass produced (as opposed to hand made 944) Boxster has a dash that cracks like ours?

Maybe back in the 80's when the 944 was made they didnt know about UV rays ruining plastic. Today dash don't crack because they have UV protection.

My 87 vette has a perfect dash pad.... I guess they knew about UV rays back then. Fiberglass is much closer to carbon fiber than plastic by construction. I guess the Mclaren F1 is junk because its made of plastic? A vette is good for what a vette is good for. It is raw and in your face type of torque. They are built like junk in terms of build quality. I also think the 944 has much junk in terms of build quality. How many people have hot air blowing into the cabin from broken plastic clip, faulty heater valve, bad a/c controller, or something else? How many people have broken cassette hinges or shifter boots? How about the inevitable cracked dash of every early 944? Broken odometer? Broken/burnt out slow window regulator? Broken sun visor clip? Broken sunroof latch? Broken door panel pocket? Leaky hatch frame that separated from the glass? These are the things I can think of off the top of my head in 30 seconds and I know I missed lots more just in the interior area. I can criticize many cars but lets be honest here. Who are we to say another car has bad build quality? I have not even started with the mechanicals but I am sure I can find just as many faults as I can with a vette.

I will say that the big V8 power is nice and easy to mod. My friend drives an 03 Cobra. The car is so freakin' fast and with a few mods on it he's pushing almost 500 Hp and can eat a Vette off the line any day. The car runs low 11's and the sticker on one is about $30000. Not a bad bargain.
Personally, until I can afford that and keep my 944, I'm not giving up my car!

Don't forget the hydroformed center rails in the C5/C6.

Either way they are safe, just built like the American junk they are. The 1996 LT-4 that my roomate had spent more time at the dealer for repairs than my 1985 944 spent broken.
The C5 started to change this (still not up to European quality but much better than the rattletrap C4). And the LS1 in the C5 is bulletproof. The LT4 was a cranky, tempermental DOHC frankenstein built in low volume.

A lot of the prejudices you have based on the C4 were wiped clean with the C5.
