Default battery went dead....

Howdy Folks,

The other day i left my lights on and the battery drained.
I tried jumping the car, the car would crank but not start, so that didn't work. Then me and some friends tried push starting it, but again, no joy. I then removed the battery and had it recharged. Car still would not start, but would crank.

Some other problems is the windows would not roll down even with a fresh charge on the battery. I kept trying and the windows finally went down, but only half way and stopped.

I thought there might be a vehicle disable system from an old alarm on the vehicle, but the local car alarm shop said not a chance since the car would at least crank.

The local Firestone guy says it is the alternator and would be happy to test it for $20.

Does anyone have any ideas before i get it towed to the shop for "diagnostics"?

Disconnect the cables from your battery and have somebody jump start the car like that. Sometimes if a battery is gone and you try to jump start it, It will suck the juice from the jump start and not give enough power to start it. If you disconnect the cables from your battery and jump it, then your battery won't suck the juice from the jump. If the car starts like this, you need a new batt.

Tried the no battery jump start and that did not work.

Started pulling fuses and trying the car after placing them back in. (only found one bad one)
After i pulled and replaced the DME the car started up. I drove it a mile back to the house and turned it off. Tried to restart and no joy. Went through the whole procedure again and still no joy. Recharging the battery now to try again.

Any more ideas?

Okay, just got the battery back and put in. Tried satarting and it's a no go. The car will crank but not turn over. However, the gauges work again! Called the shop and they said the DME likely had no effect on the start up, just a fluke.

Please help!

Most people think crank and turn over are the same thing. Just to clarify, it is not starting, right?

Ok, this might sound weird, but I had a similar problem.
Pull your window winder relay, its G11 I THINK. And then try to start the car.
If it does, then you have a bad relay that's sucking power, it was causing my car to act really funny for a couple weeks till I discovered the problem.

By the way, Autozone can test your battery and alternator for free.

Peckster , No, the car is not starting but is cranking.

Cyrus, Checkers (local autozone) says they don't touch porsche stuff.

Okay, tried the window winder relay (G7) and that's a no go. The windows still will not wind up and the gauges do not move at all, not even a little bounce.

Now to add insult to injury the car is infested with ants!

Sounds like your battery can't hold a charge.
Take it out of the car, take it to Autozone, and ask them to load test it.

If you take the battery out of the car, and walk it in, they will test it for you.

The battery is only losing charge because I am cranking the vehicle so much trying to start it, not because it is bad. There is something(?) keeping the vehicle from starting. The alternator is what the parts store won't touch, not the battery. And no, I am not going to even attempt to take out my own alternator. If i did that, half the car would need to be replaced!

Check your fuses and the dme relay, and stop cranking your motor so much it kills the battery, you'll burn out the starter too. If it doesn't start in a second or two, it's not going to start.

If it's not the battery, you know the drill, check for fuel/spark..

So you drained the battery dead leavin your lights on and the windows won't roll up... did you try taking a voltmeter to the fusebox? check your relays too, if the car is cranking over, getting fuel.. then really it should fire. this might be one of those coincidence things where something else went wrong
