I saw the original white Ferrari Testerosa on Miami vice sell on Barrett-Jackson auctions on speedvision TV this year. Don Johnson was on hand to congratulate the buyer. It sold for about $45,000. It didn't have a 350 under the hood, it was the real deal!

I knew someone would argue this about the Miami Ferrari - I'll try to scan in the shots of the car being built for the show. They did publicity shots with a real one the studio rented, the one actually driving in the show - not real, not even close.

EDIT -
We are both right - the article I have is on the stunt car used in the show - it's a Pantera chassis.

The Miami Vice Daytonas were Corvette replicas. If you watch the episodes closely, you can see the Corvette interior in some of the shots. They also had an auto and manual version of the cars and you can see the difference in some of the scenes.
There was an episode with Ted Nugent that showed them dumping a ton of dirt on a beautiful black 911. The guy that sold that car to tham had a shop about 15 miles south of where I grew up. I gasped when I saw it trashed in the episode. However, it was a burned out hulk with a brand spanking new paint job!

Agreed, the ferrari probably aged better.

I should have said "someone _like_ the one in the promo".

I read that Mr. Selleck wanted a 928, but Porsche wouldnt build a targa (Mr. Selleck is tall) so they went for a Ferrari instead. I also read that when the show became a success, the members of the production team each got a Porsche 928.

???

I remember in some interview that Tom Selleck gave each of the cast members a Porsche 928 -- out of his own pocket.

There are/where two of them. One was the real deal used for stills and public appearance's donated by Ferrari after they found out about the fake one that was being used. The second one was a repaneled panthera.

Interesting, that explains why so many 928s were used as extras (chase scenes, in the background, etc etc..) but I always thought the Ferrari fit the role perfectly. I grew up with Ferraris, and have a lot of wheel time in a 308 (fiberglass GTB) and always enjoyed picking out the Ferrari flaws in MPI.

The Daytona is Miami Vice was clearly a kit car, and a bad one at that. If you want to see a real Dayton Spyder, pick up the movie "Gumball Rally". It's about the famous race from NY to California, no kit cars were involved in this one mind you; real Daytona, real Cobra, real Porsche (911S?) and a few others. Made in the 70s, it has great footage of beautiful cars that are far too valuable today to ever be used in movies like this again. If you like cars, and movies about them, this is a must have for your collection.
