Thumbs up Check your transmission mounts - Now with lovely pictures

So, I finally got around to replacing my transmission mounts this weekend since I was already under the car installing the short shift kit. Unbelievable!!! The one on the left side of the car, near the muffler was completely shot. The rubber center portion quite literally fell out of the metal casing. The right side wasn't quite as bad, but certainly wasn't in too good shape after 17 years on the car. I'll post some pictures tomorrow when I have access to a camera.

And as a result of replacing these worn out hunks of rubber, the car seems to be a bit more quite over rough stuff. Nice.

Did you replace them or do the 3M urethane filler method on the old ones? My left one is very torn on the 83 also.

Replaced with new. I have thought about doing something along the lines of rebuild the old ones with urethane. Not sure if I'll do it or see if somebody like Prothane can do it.

It is a pretty amazing transformation. I used to hear clunking coming from the back end over bumps and sometimes when getting going from a stop. I knew why, but I didn't realize what a difference new mounts would make.

Like I said, the left one was completely torn from the casing. It was obviously completely collapsed since you can see polished marks where the center section rubbed on the lower portion of the casing. You'll understand what I mean when I post the pictures.

OK, here are some pictures. Obviously this is in regards to the cars in this series that use two trans mounts instead of one.

The first picture is of the right mount which is pulling away from the casing but is still held into place pretty firmly.

The rest of them are of the left mount which had completely collapsed and is only held into the casing by a scrap of rubber. Note the areas I outlined in red. The mount had collapsed to the point where the inner section was rubbing on the lower outer section and had polished it. It is no wonder it sounded like I had a ton of driveline lash. Now that I have replaced the mounts that noise is gone.

Hmm, I think mine have bit it as well. I have a really strange knocking if I let the clutch out too slow and it shudders. I thought it was the muffler on my rear bumper, but I just can't see how it would reach that far. The transmission mounts would make perfect sense. I'll be checking mine out really soon, as I'm tracking the car this weekend. I better check out the brakes too.

And the best part is that it is a really super easy task to replace the mounts. Jack up the back of the car and put it on jack stands, put a jack under the trans, remove the three bolts that hold each mount to the tranny, remove the one bolt that holds each mount to the cross member, unbolt the rubber center mount from the trans bracket, bolt on a new rubber center mount and reverse the process.

I think it took about a half hour per side at most.

And do one side at a time.

Thanks Michael,

You knew this was comming, where did you get the new mounts and how much?

I have a dull klunk on the pass side from what I thought might be the rear swing arm or sway bushings during a hard and fast left turn w/lots of body roll. No problem turning to the right.

If I remember correctly you use a 2 pack 3M urethane product that is typically used for crack repair in concrete and inject it the open spaces of the mount to make them more rigid. I don't think it would be as appropriate for the ones I took off my car, but if cleaned up properly I guess I could remove and reuse the metal core and completely rebuild the mounts with urethane and no rubber at all.

By the way, anybody have any idea what the typical Shore hardness is of the original rubber in these mounts.

Like most of the other Porsche parts I buy I got them from Paragon and at the time several months ago (yeah I'm slow to get around to fixing things) they were 62.00 per side. Part number 944.375.045.00

Highly recommended maintenance that I never hear about anybody doing.

In the rear of my 951 it feels like bad shocks. But could that be it? My mechanic says that those rarely go bad on turbos. Good info!

Could be shocks I guess. The transaxle in your car mounts differently than in the 924S (like my car) and earlier 944s, so I am not as familiar with what would result from a worn mount block. If I remember correctly the trans on late 944s is suspended by one point from the trans carrier so I'm not sure you would get the same knocking and driveline lash noise like what I experienced.
