Help with stripped screws on 968 wing
Hi,
It seems that a previous owner got a bit aggresive and over tighted 2 or 3 of the 4 main screws wich attach the wing to the hatch/trim. These are not the round 'nuts' with the groove in them, but rather the 4 philips screws that hold the wing itself on.
What's the best way to get these screws to give me some grip? I know with wood, we've all jammed toothpicks or pencils in the holes to 'shrink' the hole and let the screws get some traction. Is there a better more high-tech solution when you've got plastics or composites involved?
Thanks for the help.
Phil

Do they haveany kind of inserts or is it straight into the plastic or fiberglass? If it's without inserts, I'd say some sort of epoxy or JB weld, fill them and redrill, then use self tapping screws. With inserts, drill them and rethread oversized? Good Luck, BTW, that is a beutiful machine in your Avatar

Thanks Andy,
Good point on the inserts. I haven't disassembled it yet to check it out. Thought I'd elicit some input from the board first. But if there are no inserts or if I can use some alternate screws, I like the idea of filling with epoxy and redrilling. That makes some sense to me.
Thanks for the compliment on the car. It is in beautiful shape, but since I've had the car all of 7 weeks I've got to give credit to the previous owners for all their efforts. But it is everything you see in the photo, beautiful original paint, 18 inch wheels etc.
Cheers,
Phil

From my experience playing with 944 wings... You may try an impact driver. I have not seen any inserts; rather you've got steel screws into aluminum frame (= bad dielectric corrosion). The impact driver often pops them loose. That or snaps the heads off so you can remove the wing.
Then you have to fix. Left-hand drill bit is without question the best solution. That or a standard EZ-out. I highly recommend you chase all threads with a tap. Finally, you can get replacement screws at Lowe's - sure they're metric, but Lowe's has great metric selection.
Good luck.
