I think It could be one of two things. Could either be the relay for the fans in the fuse box or it could be a sensor that is in the radiator. I forget which actual sensor it was but i know it is on the bottom side of the radiator. THose would be my best guesses

What he said.

I had that problem and it ended up being the switch. But it could be the relay, too. Pull the relay and the fan will turn off. At least that'll spare you the dead battery.

I would try the fan thermoswitch first, it sends the signal that keeps the relay closed. Use an ohmmeter and test the thermoswitch when cold, if resistance is very low or less than .5 ohm, it's probably the culprit. If the relay is shorted it will read 0 ohms and should be replaced. I would suspect the thermoswitch from your description though.

If you don't have a multimeter, you can unplug the thermoswitch (located on the driver's side of the radiator). If the fans continue to run after the switch is unplugged, then replace the relay, if the fans shut off with the switch disconnected, then replace the switch.
