Pearl white is one of those colors you either love or hate. I had it on my old Grand Prix (1969 P0ncho folks, QUITE some time ago..) and it was beautiful- hard to keep clean and a pita to touch up chips.
The touch up paint I had was from the original batch of paint and it would look yellower than the sprayed on.. oh well.

I guess without the motor/transmission this car isn't that desireable from a collector's standpoint, but if those were included, would there be any value in repairing the car? Does rarity of color matter? Just curious.

Supposedly, only a few pearl whites were made in 1985 as very early production 951s. Most were used for corporate use (e.g., press, shows, publicity, etc.) before being sold and it's claimed that they all had burgundy interiors and color matched Fuchs. I've collected these facts from people selling such cars over the past few years, so who knows what the reality is.

You'll know pearl white when you see it. It's like a fine metallic.

I have a video from the 80's where some guy from PCNA was talking about a custom 930 Turbo S slantnose. He said the car was painted 6 different times because they were not happy with the finish - Pearl White. He went on to say Porsche is one of the only car companies in the world that uses "real" pearl paint - actual pearls ground up in the paint. He went on to say Porsche hates painting cars that color.

I'm pretty sure the "pearl white" you see on Caddy's and other GM cars are NOT the same pearl white this guy was talking about. Safe to say that is why Porsche only made 6.

I've tried to figure out what kind of "pearl" Audi uses since they've been painting a lot of cars Pearl White (including mine) for many years.
Anybody have any more technical details on pearl paint? I'm only quoting what's in this video, I can't say I really know much about the process or the paint itself.

There was a Pearl White 951 in Sheboygan Wisconsin for sale about 10 years ago. Guy was asking over $40k.

I think you're right, the pearl sheen on a true pearl is a surface condition only; it's not something that can be economically removed and used with any consistency in paints. Most manufactured pearl additives are a finely ground synthesized product with uniform characteristics for repeatibility in touch up applications. Most are graded by size. The Micas today are used in conjunction with fine metallics for reflectibility. Calcium carbonates will either grey or yellow with too much UV exposure.

For $750 that would make a nice center piece for some landscaping. I wonder if that goes against any local codes.......

CARFAX has 9 records on this car - that can't be that good, but I don't care to pay for the details on what those records are of.
