I had the same problem on my 87 944s
If you go to "Clarks Garage Home Page" and find chapter. or section ENG-8 under the garage Shop Manual Section... You will find the required information about the Balance Shaft timing marks, and keyways. Prior to 1985 Porsche marked the two keyways with an O for the Over shaft, and a U for the Under Shaft...
Post 1985 Porsche no longer marked the 2nd keyway with a U... this has caused a great deal of confussion, and a whole lot of out of synch lower Balance Shafts

Well I'll chime in seeing this was my post originally. My vibration is still present - I have not had time to take it in to be looked at as I moved about 1.5 hrs out of the city. When I took the car out of storage this spring, the vibration was much less than when I put it away last fall. I dont have any place to work on my car at present so I have not even poked around lately. I have heard that the rubber centered clutch can exhibit these symtoms, however my opinion at this time is that the exhaust hangars which attach directly to the torque tube are binding and transmitting exhaust vibrations to the torque tube and in turn to the shift lever which is also attached to the torque tube.
