Are a test pipe and a downpipe the same thing?
I emailed SFR about a cat, and they said:
We make a stainless testpipe for the N/A that allows you to slip in one
of our high flow cats.
Well, is it easy to "slide it on" or is it a cut and weld application? I can handle the cut and weld, but welding Stainless is totally different from regular sheet metal. I really want to use one of their cats too!

Your 944 doesn't have a downpipe. The downpipe usually refers to the tube that dumps exhaust gas out of the turbine of the turbo.
A test pipe replaces the catalytic converter. Tim is offering a test pipe that accommodates a high flow cat, for emissions testing.

So the test pipe is made to slip the cat onto, and not just a straight pipe where the cat is now?
In other words, The test pipe is not meant to be used instead of a cat?
what I'm trying to get at is if it's cut and weld, or if I'm going to be able to slide the cat onto the test pipe without that.

On your car the cat is replaced by a test pipe. It will bolt up to both ends if a Bursch test pipe is used. I made my own by lopping off the flanges on the header or in your case down pipe not the down pipe as the 951. Welded the flanges onto a pipe and a O2 bung and mounted in the same location as the cat. The pipe with the cat is a high flow cat/test pipe which is for the 951 model. Atleast my understanding of SFR is for turbos not NA's. If wanting to pass inspection the SFR pipe allows for the cat to remain on the car to pass.
Bursche test pipe has to be removed to pass as would mine if I had inspections here. This help?

Three things to know:
Test Pipe (from headers onwards)
CAT back (starts from the end of the test pipe to muffler tip)
Downpipe (Refers to turbocharger exhaust side and ends/joins up at the test pipe)
So, the test pipe replaces the CAT, but there is a 'slip joint' to allow you to add a CAT (for emission reasons) or you can just live without the CAT (or get a high flow one).
