I was always under the impression the MPG gauge is run by the signals it gets fromo the DME and speedo, no actual vaccum hose running from the engine.

I think there are kits for intalling a fuel pressure gauge right on the fuel rail permanently so you always have a good idea of what the pressure is doing. May want to consider that option in the future. I sure wouldn't use that MPG gauge for diagnosing, knowing how innaccurate they are.
