Question Anyone have experience with Eurasian Foreign??

Does anyone have any experience or know of Eurasian Foreign?

Supposedly they are a salvage yard/dismanteler. I signed up for a site that sent my part request to a bunch of salvage yards, and I got this reply which seems like it may be what to do.

I'm looking for a late 944 NA tranny for those of you who have missed my last 20 threads this weekend.

750 dollars, shipping is included, and 6 month warranty. Supposedly in good condition. He didn't tell me what mileage, I'll ask when I call tomorrow, but would any of you feel comfortable doing this? I don't want to buy a 500 dollar ebay transmission and have it crap out on me or be junk when I get it.

To further the info I gave ya in the the last few PM's we have exchanged........

It might be wise to ask for the mileage and the year/code of the trans. The mileage will give you a good idea of how much life is left in the transmission. The year/code ("J" verses "K") could even be more important here. From all of the research I have done, it is clearly evident that transmissions from 1988>on are stronger than pre-1988 transmissions. If you are getting one, and are paying $750, it may as well be one of those.

Also, you want to verify that they aren't sending you a pre-85.5 trans at least.........

is J the post 85.5, or is K? I just found a few locally at a site someone else mentioned in teh other thread.. one for 595, one for 700, one for 800.. looking into what year car, mileage, etc... It would be great to be able to go pick one up!

Thanks for all the help Jeremy, do you know what exactly they changed which made the 88 and on tranny stronger?

One more question. Is the 944 S and S2 transmissions any different, ie ratios and such?

Hey Devon,

This is a copy and past from another thread (there are so many!) that I wrote about this subject:

"There were two different manual transmissions used in the 944 n/a cars from 1985.5 thru 1987. One for USA/Can/Japan spec, and one for ROW (euro) spec.They are as follows:

USA/Can/Japan Code: 016J Casing Stamp: QM (US/Can No LSD), QL (Japan No LSD), 8QW and 4M were LSD in those two versions.

ROW Code: 016K Casing Stamp: QK (non-LSD), 7Q (LSD)

Both books state that for 1988 and 1989 models, all cars received the ROW manual transmissions, there were no 016J transmissions supplied after 1987. The gearing was the same for ROW and US/Can/Japan transmissions. No mention is made pertaining to the actual difference between the two versions."

So it looks like you want a "K" (here in the US that means you want a 1988 or 1989 trans). I still don't know what was changed, but I would bet money that the r&p is stronger/harder on the "K" transmissions. I have a "K" in my car right now. One day if I run acrossed a dead "K" trans I could send out the ring gear and have the hardness tested and compared to a "J" trans. Of course, if there are different part numbers on the two, that would prove it right there.......

So, I don't think you answered one of the?'s, Can I use and S or S2 tranny from that year? It seems there are a lot more 88 and 89 S transmissions available for not too bad prices....

So far besides the 750 one, i've found one more for 600 dollars, 129k miles, 99 day warranty, and I can go pick it up (about an hour and a half away from my house)....
Does that sound decent as well? at least that way i can see it before I get it... Oh yes, its a 1986 tranny. Is there anything besides opening it up that you can tell? Can you feel slack by just turning the cv flanges by hand?

Yeah, you asked that one while I was .

You can use an S or S2 trans. I had an S2 trans in my car for awhile. The gearing is slightly different (taller) verses an NA trans (it's all in the final drive AKA r&p), but not much (not as bad as the difference between a 951 and NA). To tell you the truth, I barely noticed it.

Of course, the S2 trans grenaded on me in about a year of autocrossing, but I have no idea as to the mileage or abuse that were on it before it was installed in the car .

So, a 1988+ 944 S transmission would be a better bet than a 1986 944 transmission ?

Sorry, my mind's pretty wasted from thinking of so many different transmissions in teh last 20 minutes.

That one doesn't sound bad, but for that money I would hope for less miles <or> 88/89 vintage. If you could talk them down a bit, it does have the local pick-up advantage.

You could turn the flanges by hand, and if they spin good that means that generally it is in good shape and not missing teeth or chunky. But that does not ensure that there aren't any cracks or compromized teeth that are getting ready to let go...........

Yep.

Although, in regards to gearing, the best option would be an 88/89 944NA trans.

Hey i think i figured out what i'm going to do. I just talked the guy with teh 750 offer, down to 650. i'm pretty sure this is what i'm going to do. shipped 650 wiht 6 month warranty, i know 88 would be better, but, I cant find any nearly that cost effective or with a warranty...
