Default '87 white - Grand Prix white? L908?

Folks,

Need to do some painting on the recent addition. Beside some bumps and scratches, one headlight cover was bent and the new one was too crazed to use. It's stripped now so I need paint.

Q1) Can't find the paint code. Not in the jambs. Not under the hood. Not under the hatch carpet. Anybody have a pic to help an old blind man out?

Q2) In the absence of hard information, I figure it's "Grand Prix White" code L908. Was any other white offered that year? Is that the same as "Alpine White"

Q3) Any good sites for this?

Here's two I found:

Lists Porsche paint names with codes:
http://www.paintscratch.com/

Cross references paint codes to commercial cans:
http://www.plasti-kote.com/

Alpine White is available from Plasti-Kote over-the-counter as #5803 (spray) and #3300 (brush).

Dupli-Color, which is more common from what I see, has given up on older cars and smaller manufacturers. No listings for Porsche at all on-line or in stores. Used to be there'd be a big catalog cross-referencing paints back 40 years for about every manufacturer.

Wow. Thanks, guys.

I've seen a number of 944s described as "Grand Prix White" but, according to Clarks Garage, it was never offered!

My old 85.5 was Alpine White but the Fuchs wheels were Grand Prix white according to the option list.

Made it though just fine. I got a package ready to go out for you today. You should see it this week some time. Give me a call when it gets there so I can make sure to have my ducks in a row with the UPS store before you take it down.

I got a VW touch up paint at Pep Boys...same as Alpine White. Alpine is more of an antique white than Grand Prix white (which is very bright white).

Ah yes. Information is valuable.

Took the L90E code to the paint shop and there's the dimwit who mis-matched and mis-mixed paint for my 928 last year. "I'll pass."

The much simpler way is to get VW Alpine White. Looking in the Dupli-Color catalog it's even listed as L90E.

Did the first painting last night. Not perfect but touch-up paint almost never matches the original.

Only trick is the marks in the metal for the headlight cover. Looks like it's ground after being bent, or maybe it's welded, about an inch in from each side. Didn't notice any filler when it was stripped. The paint did seem a bit thick.

My first 924 was Alpine White - L90A as I recall. Definitely an "antique" sort of white, not pure... and I didn't like it much. Probably a fair bit more yellow in it than L90E.

FWIW, the car in the pic (left, my racecar/avatar) is Grand Prix White... but a different kind than you're thinking... it's Pontiac Grand Prix white!
