Once you start it, does it keep running? How is the compression?

could be a number of things, dme, dme temp sensor, fuel related, spark related, coil related, electrical. I would say start with the cheapest things and work your way up. What does it run like once you get it going?
Clean the grounds, especially the ones on the + batt terminal
Check for good spark, by pullling a plug wire, and putting an old plug in it, or just replaceing plugs later, cheap!
Check for fuel pressure, unplug injectors one by one while running to see if any don't change the running condition, or check the fuel pump
Maybe the DME Relay, good to have an extra around anyways
and then Maybe the DME

Go in that order, and i'm sure others will add more and you should be good to go!

Please try connecting a single jumper cable from the negative battery terminal to somewhere on the engine block, let us know if it starts any more easily.

the people i just bought this 944 from told me the car started fine(org. owners!) till they put a new starter on. then it developed the current problem. is there any relation or mere coincidence?

Could be a relation between starter and this problem. If you want take the starter off, two 19mm bolts, check all of the wiring, examine the condition of the flywheel teeth. my guess is still on electrical problems, did you do what i suggested??

The starter is properly engaging the flywheel, right?

When you have the "hot-start" problem, the engine is cranking, just not turning over, right?

Did you look at the ground on the engine bellhousing?

hi kevin! yes it cranks like a champ. engaging fine. let it sit overnight and it will start on 3rd try -shut it down and it wont start again for a long time(6-10 hrs.). have not checked that ground.is it pertinent to this prob.? i know 928's well and am a decent mechanic, but the 944 is quite different. thanks for helping me., kevin

Given this information, we can rule out any problems with the flywheel or starter.

I thought the ground strap on 83's were prone to corrosion, and therefore, could contribute to a hot-start problem. Follow the negative battery cable down to the bellhousing, check for corrosion, and report back to us.

kevin, checked the grounds, still the same. tach does bounce while cranking, fuel pressure is fine and the dme relay also checks ok. (jumpered dme rly. socket and still wuoldn't start. the po swears it didn't have the start prob till after the new starter was installed. makes no sense. looking forward to everyones input on this. thankyou all, kevin
