Default alarm control unit location

Several folks have suggested that a non-starting engine may be caused by a fault in the alarm system control unit or wiring/connections. My '86 951 factory owner's manual makes no mention of any alarm system, nor does Haynes, etc. The fuse box diagram shows nothing about any alarm. The Porsche parts catalogue mentions alarm control units for our cars, but has no drawings, pics, or indication of where the alarm (if any) is located.

So, WHERE is such alarm control unit, what does it look like, how to access, and how to test?

Pull back the carpeting in the passenger side footwell, and you'll see a plywood panel held by 4 screws. Loosen them, and pull the panel out. There will be a bracket on the back, holding the DME and behind it, the Alarm Control Module.

My S2 would not start, and it turned out to be this control box. Replaced it, and it started right up normally.

The only way to test for a faulty module is probably by trying to jump the DME relay itself. Do a search and it will tell you which pins to jump. This bypasses the DME and gets the fuel pump working so the car will start. My car would start this way, but even with a new DME relay it would not, since the Alarm Module was broken.

Good luck.

If you have a factory alarm, there's a key slot beside the door key on the driver's side. If you don't have that, you don't have an alarm.

The alarm was part of the Central Locking System option, my 86 has it and it's shown in PET under the schematics for CLS. As Peckster says if you have two keyholes on the driver side you have CLS.

Holy **** man you still have this problem??

Ok, don't go off thinking of any random reasons as to why the car won't start.
IIRC you were installing chips, and since then, it hasn't been able to fire.
If you are 100% sure that the chips are in the right direction, and the harness is in tight, and it still doesn't start, try swapping DMEs with a guy nearby you.

on my 89, only one keyhole, when you central lock the doors, it automatically arms the alarm.
