I believe you're right on the money with that one

Smoking during start up normally means valve guides/seals are bad and whole thing = head gasket job and machine shop $ along with timing belt, water pump, etc. To a normal person, that means an extra $2000. He has it listed locally for $2700 written on his back glass and registration looks like 2002 (extra $250).

i'd stay away from this car. he is quite deceptive in his responses to the questions asked. i trust anyone who feels compelled to tell me more about their personal condition than the condition of the vehicle. any porsche person would immediately state when the timing belt and water pump were last done. assume it hasn't been done in at least two years, add that to the fact he just started it up and drove it 100 mph, which is stupid as hell for a car like that which has been sitting for a year. obviously he doesn't know anything about the car.

Buyer beware (Caveat Emptor..) Wow that sounds questionable from day 1. Like I said, unless you are hard core 951 (LegoLand is rght on), I wouldn't assume anything on that one. I usually get confrontational if a dude doesn't know what he's yapping about. If he admits to not knowing jack about his ride, then that's ok but he should be preapred to lower his price, simply from of the fact that there 'unknowns'. Of course through ebay, this will happen anyway. Don't buy it if you can't afford to put back in good shape or have your way with it, no matter the cost (kinda like a ho? doh!)!

Well im not exactly a normal person. Parts plus machine shop would be that solution. I didnt notice registration. They guy has been pretty straight forward with me although i have yet to ask the hard questions. My guess is that since he got it in late '02 with 75k miles (CARFAX) that he has never replaced the timing belts or the WP. This is not a problem as that was the first thing i had planned to do. This would be the 2nd 44 in the driveway, so i could let it sit for awhile to make sure it is running fine.

Also, when i went and looked at the car (hes local to me, but wasnt there at the time) it said $3500 OBO on rear glass.
