Hah! Get this. I was going through the car as I regularly do re tightening everything to spec and when I got to the intake head screws. Every last one(8) was loose! Just enough to suck air. So after tightening them I go for a ride. And what a MAJOR difference in power! No exageration here. I had no clue what my power was really supposed to feel like as this is my first Porsche and never driven any other Porsche so what I was driving is what I thought it was not what it should be.

The power is stable through out the powerband and got up to 115 mph much faster than the time it took to reach 115 before the service.

In short I have been driving a car for 2 years and not utilizing all the power it was supposed to produce. So hence the GAIN in HP for no $ and took one minute to "install"!
Boy the intake really must have been sucking in air big time and really lucky the engine didn't fry(lean)!

Check your nuts!!!

mmm no laughing please, but where are the intake head screws? Mine is not as fast as other 944s I have driven, maybe this is why.

Look for your fuel injectors near the rail. All 8 are running with the rail. See the four tubes going into the head look down on each tube and they are there. They are allen heads.

 

6mm allen (hex) head, it should not require any major assembly to get to them. Also check for presence or absence of intake-to-head gaskets; my 951's P.O. evidently "neglected" to install the gaskets on three out of the four connections. Needless to say, this is a problem with proper sealing of the mating surfaces. You can check with a mirror to see if the gaskets are present without taking anything apart.

Did you see any liquid" blow by" around the areas w/o gaskets? Did it appear clean or look as if gas is leaking out?

 

No evidence of it; there was some grunginess in the area but nothing worse that I've seen on other cars. Needless to say, those gaskets are getting replaced. Actually some good that comes out of all this turbo replacement B.S. - I've found a couple of brittle hoses that could stand replacing and get a chance to change plugs, oil, etc. I'll also do a wastegate check. I also found an injector with a cracked cap (the plastic part near the pintle), not a hugely big deal, but needless to say, a reseal kit is on the way. Little stuff like that.

 

Me, the PO had placed the wrong spark plug on. Just changed to platimum +4. Al my misfiring is gone!!!

 

Grunge huh. Just may have blown vaporized fuel past the gasket! That is how mine appears. When you mentioned missing gaskets got me to think on why one downtube had some fuel residue around the area. Thanks!

But on the issue of tightening everything. I see why Porsche is so LOCTITE happy! Last track outing I re tightened a ton of fasteners and I have found that this is a REGULAR need to do! Every last nut and bolt.....! I had not payed to much attention to the engine and all the nuts/bolts till lately. Pays to give the car a complete go through.

My friend had 2 engine fry just for this reason, loose intakes and ran real lean then caboom.

Moral of this story is get out your wrenches and start torquing any thing that moves!

 

Take a glass of water and pour it around the area where the intake mates with the cylinder head, while the motor is idling. If there is a change in the idle speed, you've got a leak.

 

On a cool engine perhaps with warm water. But I would not want to suck water in either.

anyone got any quickie torque numbers for the head (Nm/lb-ft)?
