Default OT: Website developers, can we make a used parts price database??

Just a thought, it would be really cool if we could come up with a website that users could input prices that they have bought or sold parts for.

Start with four basic topics (early NA, Late NA, Turbo, Turbo-S) each with a drop down list of most general parts and be able to enter in a price and a condition rating, poor, good, or perfect. The web site then could approximate a average price range on condtion.

If everyone participated we could really put to rest alot of confusion for those looking for a fair price on used parts.

Anybody have any ideas on how we could do this???

Jason, I'd be in too, and having parted out one whole car I have my own little lists of how much stuff will reasonably go for, let me know if you need some price quotes...GREAT IDEA!

hmm...that would be awsome!!! However, it would take a lot of dedication and some kick @$$ database skills.

I don't think it would be hard to do at all. I do a lot of work for my job in Access DB and we aren't talking about a lot of effort. We would need a server or someone to host it, then create a form with field inputs, and a table for the information. The results could be listed in a report, and depending on what fields are used, you could look for prices based upon location, etc, average price, median price, etc.

One might consider for the accessability to the site be password protected, managed by a table with active Rennlist members and their chosen passwords to get on the site (we would probably want to avoid unlimited access so that unscrupulous vendors do not "skew" the results with funky entries). You would need someone to manage the various tables involved for the information and security.

I'm not an access wizard by any means, but someone with a little more experience than me could whip this project out in no time. I think the harder two issues will be the host/server, and finding a person that is willing to stay up on the upkeep of the tables periodically.

Just my 2cents.

I have a list in excel of Standard PM parts, used parts and pricing for the last 5 years or so- I'd be willing to send someone a copy if they wanted to take on the task-
Maybe "tune up" parts section with a web link to the big 3 or 4 parts suppliers and current pricing, Common replacement parts (a-arms, alternators, ps pumps, fuel pumps) and known issue parts ( fuel rails, DME's, etc) and new/ used parts pricing. as we (Rennlisters) bought parts we could add the last price paid for each part and from whom it was purchased from.. This list would grow very fast.

Thats kinda what I had envisioned.. I can build sites, but it's not my forte.

Maybe a "Rennlist users parts history" online- I wonder if John D. would have any issues with a site hosted here....

I didn't think the database part would be that difficult, as I do this sort of thing for SCADA systems alot. I just don't know my way around doing it in HTML land.
I agree with Tifo on that we would have to limit access, or vendors would try and take advantage of the system.
I think this could be pretty helpful if we can pull it off.
Keep the ideas coming!!

If you link to an Excel sheet you could just use a Pivot table to show all of that data. You could sort the pivot by year, model, etc. I will post a screen capture of what I am referring to.

The easiest way to do it is using PHP/MYSQL.

I could do it in my free time and host it.

I think this would be great. I have parted out 5 cars including the 88 that I'm doing now. I still have problems knowing what to price some stuff at. If we could come up with this, I would price all of my stuff with the list, and give Rennlist members some type of discount. Let's do this.....

Just an outline of what is needed, I'm pretty busy so I just skimmed the post and seem to understand it, but I would like a really detailed out line of all the features needed. I could even just pay one of my programmers to do it if I get too busy about $25 or so and it would help me out too since I want to know if I should part out my peice of crap 944, its really pissing me off today.

so post the details and I'll get it done...
