Differences between a 1984 944 and a 1987 944S?
A few that come to mind:
*Interior restyling from 85.5 on. Larger vents, etc.
*Cast front suspension control arms
*16V 2.5 liter engine with DOHC - important to check chain tensioner
*Wheels were either cast phone dial or forged sewer lid style
The 944S is among the more rare 944 models.

What does upgrading mean? You're buying a new car?
There are many differences between the two, and heads for the Ss are gettig scarce because so many have been damaged by cam chain tensioner failures.

don't forget sway bars.. some 944's in the early years came with none in the rear.. and a standard 21.5 in the front, the S comes with either a 25.4 mm front tubular or a 26.8 if i remember right.. and then a 16/18 mm rear.. lots of suspension differences

thought i'd add something here.. 944's, as you know, are AWESOME handling cars. I'd reccomend playing on that with an n/a instead of turbo'ing it. you'll be lookin at WAY too much cash and you don't/won't use the turbo much on the track.. just ont he street where it'll get you in ****. Buy a big big front sway, a huge rear sway, do some weight deletes, buy some nice heavy springs, some adjustable gas shocks and then you'll have LOTS of fun with your car and all for about $1200 us, 1/2 the price a NICE 951 engine alone would cost you
