Turbo in my 90 944S2 Convertible
#16
There is a wrench in Dallas that has done a few 3 I think. Hell of a nice guy, currently has a 3.0L 951 Turbo. I can give his number if you are serious about it.

Porsche never turbocharged the 3.0L and chose a 2.5L probably because doing so would hurt 911 sales very much. I mean would you pay twice as much for a 911 if you could get a 944 with twice the hp for half the price?

Tifo,
Looking back, I think you are right, but the thread title "turbo in my S2" rather then "turbo my S2" made me think he wanted to swap engines. Either is incredible, but I think it would be more cost effective to stick in a 951 power plant, especially if you have a good running condition S2 engine you can sell for an additional $3K.

I honestly do not think that there was a 2 to 1 pricing ratio of 911 verses 944, especially near the end of the 944 series run. The 944 cars became increasingly more exspensive over the years. The 951 and S2 cars, which offered similar performance to a 911, carried a large premium over the standard 944. A 944 series car with a 3.0 turbo from the factory would have been very pricey indeed.
BTW, they experimented with a 16V turbo motor for the S2, but it never got past the initial development stages. I think it had a slightly smaller displacement though, somewhere around 2.7.

I heard they made a S2 Turbo, but that after testing them, they backed out because it destroyed the 911 in performance on and off the track... so they quit that idea.

I could look this chapter up in EWE tonite and re-read it to familiarize myself and then give a better response as to why the project was canned.

bball1561: Why do you need all that extra power? For the street? Track? Autocross?
Adding a turbo will result in a gain in power, but it may take quite a while to tune it properly. For starters, you'll have to lessen the compression, and most likely advance the timing. If you go down on compression, that will most likely effect the low end torque that our motors are known for.
Do you have a lot of miles on the clock? If so, adding a turbo to your motor may add undue stress on engine components. Have you had a major rebuild on the motor? If not, once you turbo it, you will most likely be heading in that direction! Have you replaced all your seals/gaskets? Might want to before you add the turbo. How are your rod bearings? Rollers? Main bearing? Your clutch? Better make sure all those are up to speed as well?
When Porsche built the 968 Turbo, they used the 944S2/968 3.0 liter block, but used a 951 8 valve head instead of our 16 valve head. That's something you should consider - if Porsche didn't use the 16 valve head, that tells ya something...
Your 944S2 motor is about 15 years old - while it is a terrific engine, it's old enough for me to wonder if slapping a turbocharger on the system is a good idea or not.
So, if you decide to turbo your S2 motor, consider this: it's probably going to cost 2x or 3x what you think, given all the maintenance items you should address at first, the extra items you need (like a 951 8-valve head), and a bunch of unkowns you will encounter!

I've read the anderson site, very intresting. Can you really make a 100HP gain to the rear tires over the stock motor. I don't think the moter will last that long won't it.
Whats the prising on a kit for a 8v car.
Anderson Motorworks offers a complete Supercharger conversion for the 8 Valve 944 and the 16 Valve 944S2. The conversion adds an honest 100HP gain to the rear tires over the stock motor on both models

Anderson Motorworks? Is this the same Anderson Motorworks that Dave (Rennlist member) had some issues with?
Here's the story.
