What Damian is saying is that the 944s were built at the Audi plant in Neckarsulm, whereas I believe the 968s were built at the Porsche Zuffenhausen plant.

It still doesn't make a 944 an Audi, though.

Thanks, Luis. In fact, some of the very late euro S2's were built by Porsche as well, as you know. I'm not being a snob about this, but you can tell the fit and finish is a little better-plus you had the option of getting Exclusiv bits and pieces for the cars-paint to sample, rootwood this and that, fancy leathers, etc etc.

Yes, and I believe the tell-tale sign for that is the "S" for Stuttgart in place of the regular "N" for Neckarsulm in the 944 VIN numbers (per Peter Morgan's book).

So Damian, when are you gonna take the plunge with that Powerhaus upgrade?

I want to see my year end bonus, and I'm waiting on two other estimates. I just had my office upgraded, nice view of the Plaza Hotel and Central Park, so I'm hoping this is a good sign . . .

Someone on Rennlist once said that the four Audi rings are stamped into the sheetmetal of the 924/944, under the driver's seat. Anybody have a pic?

The first I've heard of that.... LOL. What parts? I know they brought in a Japanese firm in the 90s to show them how to cut costs (which explains some of the quality issues on newer cars).

If you look at the window sticker of a 997, you'll see it labelled as "55% German." This percentage has been falling over the years.

Does anyone have a 944 window sticker for comparison?

Not that it's a big deal, but it is interesting. Cars nowadays have many companies/countries involved in production. Pretty soon German cars will be less than 50% German!

How about $1380? The velvet-smooth engine shifts precisely, and boost hits with a slight warpage of time, with a low drone. Ok- it still leaks fluid...but not profusely. I got what I paid for- a lighter than stock setup, and interior thats shredded-up.

Had a '87 NA and now a '89 S2. Bought the '89 S2 because it was pre-cab and about 150lbs lighter then 90 and 91 S2's. The '87 reminded me of some of my earlier british cars, light and tossable, except more reliable. The S2 makes me feel like I'm driving a "Porsche". With the turbo brakes and suspension it is a different beast at speed. The 951 has the most potential, but those hoses seem to leak a lot. My vote is for the S2. (BTW, on car components, I think my jeep cherokee is only 50% american made!!!)
