Oh yeah, and how could I forget to mention... 5)cheap power. for under $300 you can get an LBE/AccuBoost and chips that will have your 951 at full boost at 3000rpm and putting down 230 to the tires (~270bhp).

I have to agree with FSA. I've had an N/A, but not an S. I now own a turbo, more than slightly modified (runs 23 psi), and it is just plain insane! I've raced AMGs, NSXs, Ferrari's, BMWs, Roush's, and just about anything that thinks they have a chance. When we're done, win or lose, they are saying Holy $%&#! That is a fast car!

I've thought about a 968 from a pure refinement standpoint (and I like the body refinements, as well), but really the differences there don't make up the flat out ***** of a Turbo 951 - esp. when you consider the price difference.

It'll be hard for me to switch to something else, unless of course I run into a pile of cash. Then I'm thinking Z06 or 996.

Anders is correct, no mo30 ever was available for 968 cabs, I've got the car and the original Porsche printed material. Rumor has it that a dealer/owner ordered one with sport suspension (springs and Koni's) but no coilovers, big brakes or anything.

I went directly from a coupe to my present cab, and where there is a touch more scuttle shake it's very slight, very very slight. And my car is lowered with sport springs, lowered rear, and mo30 sways. The strut tower brace came later, I could feel it help but only a tad. This is 'spirited street' driving only, mind you, the car is too nice to DE. Wax good, track bad, as I say.

Along these lines what's the difference between an '84 944 and a '92 968?

968 had a 6 speed and a monsterous 3.0 four cylinder that put out around the same HP as a stock 951, better rubber and I think suspension (dont quote me as I'm a fan but not an expert in this end of P-cars)
944 had a 2.5 four and a five speed box

My personal fav of your trio is the 951 dur to the tunability as with a little cash these things make monster power and are a complete sleeper (In fact I witnessed an 89 944 turbo blow the doors of a 996 TT at last weekends glendora ridge run)

whats up with the 968 S/C kits? I heard these are cheap and make for a real threat to most anything on the road.

this was my car stock except for an LBE. Wouldnt be surprised if there was a vacuum leak or two as well, but dunno. my next upcoming dyno sheet should like a bit better power-wise.

Thanks for all the input guys

As for me learning to drive, that is true, but probably not to the extent that you think. I've been driving for almost three years, and have attended two 'advanced' driving courses (very very basic). I also race karts with decent success, although not as much as I used to..

Modding does appeal to me quite a bit.. I've worked in a few performance workshops a couple of years ago and I have pretty much full access to a newly opened shop that specialises in tuning european cars. My only gripes with that, are that there is not very much you can do with an S2.

If I were to get a 968, I'd keep it naturally aspirated, but probably eventually build it to conform with australias Porsche Challenge class A rules (4.8kg/hp). Ditto with the 951. Turbocharging a 968 or s2, or going crazy with a 951, would probably cost me less than usual, however it would still require a large sum of cash that I would prefer to spend on something else, like a 911. My father has owned a number of them - one of which was quite a quick 964 turbo that comfortably ran an 11 second pass at its first and only excursion to the strip.

I'm quite familar with 'boost' for who asked.. the majoroty of car enthusiasts I know personally all drive cars like silvias, skylines, wrx's, etc

I have my heart set on a 968, however my wallet, and the restrictions placed on me do not agree.
My brain says the S2 is the sensible choice, my heart says its the more 'boring' choice.
the 951, oddly, seems like a comprimise.

I dont think I can make a descision just yet. So far, I sat in a 968 tip at a dealership, driven a friends '89 951, and have arranged a drive in an S2. Even after I've driven all of them, I dont know if I could still choose between them.

I wouldent be suprised if I chose something totally different.

Contrary to what I've just said, all your feedback has been a great help! thanks again

Fitzgerald Racing in Oz has done more than a handful of 968 Turbo S replica's, so you have a great source for parts/tuning if you decide to go that route as well.

For a hp comparison, also on a Dynojet, my car in stock form made over 205 rwhp and 202lb/ft of torque.

You should dyno well higher then that with your list of mods.

FSAracer03 my car is far far stiffer then my fathers 993 cab by alot! Its not even close.

Also When my 944 is on the lift the doors open just fine.

The basics:

84 944
2.5ltr 8v I-4 ~150hp
5 speed manual
old style interior
old offset and suspension

968:
3.0ltr 16v 236hp
updated interior
updated suspension
very refined exterior
16-17" wheels/tires.
Much newer car with better styling and potentially less maintenance costs.

Closer ratio, 6 speed gearbox, lighter con rods, forged crank, I loved my 85.5, but it's chalk and cheese. Better brakes. One big difference is the headlamp design-you see much better driving at night. Much nicer steering wheel. One built by Audi, the other built by Porsche. Variocam.

The only power enhancing mods are the APE MAF, chips, LBE, and test pipe. The 275lb-ft and 240hp is pretty typical with this set-up. The MAF doesn't add much with the stock turbo (10-15hp) so the real gains come from the chips and test pipe. With the APE chips I've not seen anyone get much more than 250hp.

I plan to see alot of improvement when I buy the chips and wastegate from Danno. The gains should be a little more TQ and about 260hp.

When I get around to upgrading the turbo, the MAF will have more of an impact with the higher flowing turbo.

I do have to point out that the 944 was never built by Audi. The shared components list was also greatly shorted from the 924, which in a way, WAS built by Audi.
