Trying to solve my engine's hesitation problem I found this:
http://www.frwilk.com/944dme/
Looking around I thought that early DME's could not be upgraded. That's till I found the DME mod info. Has anyone used it and Dyno tested them?

Early DMEs have chips soldered to the board. The chips can be desoldered and replaced. The FRWilk chip is supposed to solve the NA Shudder problem. I don't know if this will help performance.
IIRC, published information about power gains from "chipping" a NA show a small gain in horsepower. I think most people do not think that the gain would be worth the expense and effort on the NA.

Pinouts are the same for early and late DME. Simple swap.
Chips are worth 2-4 hp at most. Not really noticeable IMHO. For a street car I would not bother with the effort. It is more of a placebo effect vs real improvemnt. For a race car 2-3 hp can worth something.

As I understand it... It may not be a simple swap. Early cars (that are equipped with AC) have a separate, "idle stabilizer" if you will that is activated by the DME whne the AC is activated. There is an extra wire coming off the wiring harness to plug this unit in to. The late cars do not have this, nor do they have the wire on the wiring harness. Meaning, the late DME probably does not send the signal for that out. You would want ot upgrade to the late engine's idle stabilizer unit (found under intake manifold), which was enhanced to not need an extra stabilizer for when AC engaged..
Correct me if I am wrong, but that is what I gather.

In SCCA IT they went so far as to say any modification inside the stock ECU box is legal. Now people install Motecs wired to the stock connector.
