Default Miracle solution or just snake oil, performance chips for Early 944's

Trying to solve my engine's hesitation problem I found this:
http://www.frwilk.com/944dme/

Looking around I thought that early DME's could not be upgraded. That's till I found the DME mod info. Has anyone used it and Dyno tested them?

His chips are recommended by many people and all that do have them... I will be getting one soon as well.

Early DMEs have chips soldered to the board. The chips can be desoldered and replaced. The FRWilk chip is supposed to solve the NA Shudder problem. I don't know if this will help performance.

IIRC, published information about power gains from "chipping" a NA show a small gain in horsepower. I think most people do not think that the gain would be worth the expense and effort on the NA.

Change to late AFM and convert to the later DME to change the chip without resoldering and sell your old DME to offset the cost.

Is there a guide to this procedure somewhere.

Are all the pinouts the same on the two DMEs? All the same sensors and stuff?

Pinouts are the same for early and late DME. Simple swap.

Chips are worth 2-4 hp at most. Not really noticeable IMHO. For a street car I would not bother with the effort. It is more of a placebo effect vs real improvemnt. For a race car 2-3 hp can worth something.

As I understand it... It may not be a simple swap. Early cars (that are equipped with AC) have a separate, "idle stabilizer" if you will that is activated by the DME whne the AC is activated. There is an extra wire coming off the wiring harness to plug this unit in to. The late cars do not have this, nor do they have the wire on the wiring harness. Meaning, the late DME probably does not send the signal for that out. You would want ot upgrade to the late engine's idle stabilizer unit (found under intake manifold), which was enhanced to not need an extra stabilizer for when AC engaged..

Correct me if I am wrong, but that is what I gather.

Not to stray of topic here but how do race techs inspect for chipped cars? Open the unit to see a AF chip? Plug in test? Just curious.

The SCCA threw in the towel on it. Unfortunately, they also threw in the kitchen sink too.

In SCCA IT they went so far as to say any modification inside the stock ECU box is legal. Now people install Motecs wired to the stock connector.
