Unhappy Sterring wheel shake

OK...I've searched the archives and didn't turn up anything....
My problem is that as I am driving down the road, whenever I drive over any road irregularities, (uneven pavement, bumps..etc) the steering will shake and after a second or two smooth out. It gives the same kind of shake like when the wheels are out of balance. However, when the pavement is smooth....no shake. I checked the front wheel bearings and they were fine but I readjusted anyways. I also moved the wheel side to side and up/down and found no play at all. Do you have any suggestions on where to look to next? Maybe the tie rods or the ball joints?
For history, I just put new wheels and tires on the car. The old phone dials/ tires were badly worn so I assumed the shake was coming from the old tires.

Check the upper strut mounts/bearings.

Thanks for the quick reply!! Correct me if I'm wrong about checking the strut mounts. I rocked the car, while on the ground, side to side while looking at the strut tower. I didn't see any movement. While the car was jacked up, I pulled the wheel up and saw a little up/down movement. Am I looking in the right place and is this normal?

How long since the car's front wheels were balanced?

If that checks out, then you may want to see if tightening the front wheel bearings reduces the shimmy. It's a very straightforward, but you will need to put the front end of the car up on jack stands. Check the archives for the procedure.

Yieldsign- My struts seem fine. Car handles great except for the shimmy over bumps. Also, there are no noises or anything coming from the front. Any ideas for a difinitive test for struts.

Luis- I just purchased the wheel a week ago and have been balanced twice for sake of elimination.

I need to move....I'm the only 944 in Myrtle Beach so I really don't have anything to compare to!!!

Then try tightening the front wheel bearings. It's easy and can only make things better.
