And the dealership's computer apparently didn't know this, or they just had one blanket 5-rib belt for all 944s. Jeremy, you should take over PCNA.

They must not work on many 944's then.

Sorry, I don't have the time right now. But when this job falls thru, I'll consider it.............

Ok guys, i have a new belt lying around here and this is what i found:

Part Number on Belt: 944 105 157 04 and the last number 107 (weird)

Belt Brand : Contitech

Made In Germany

Do Not Crimp

Another set of numbers : 1 E 130702

so i guess the OEM is Contitech afterall

Exactly. It appears that the same applies in Europe. The oil filters I get at my European dealer come in the gray box with maroon Porsche lettering, are painted black with white Porsche lettering, yet they are "Made in USA," and I suspect made by Purolator, not the MAHLEs preferred by everyone "in the know."

I recently got a new power steering belt, marked Porsche, and it was also Made in USA by Gates. I bought an alternator belt, marked Porsche, and too it was Made in USA by DAYCO. These parts were bought at a Porsche dealer in Europe, mind you!

In the consumables at least, I agree that OEM and dealer parts aren't necessarily the same.

Goes to show how effective the marketing people are in brainwashing the general public. When it comes to belts, I trust gates and t-belts I use continental (OEM around here).

thanks for all the input people. i'm going with the continental conti-tech. i'm not falling for the "oem" is always best brainwash.

also, i said the belt was rediculously MORE expensive than the conti tech which it is if you are getting the same conti tech belt. why pay $38 when you can pay $11 for the same belt?

I use the Conti as well - it's a quality belt from a very reputable company.

Early cars, 30K. Late cars with automatic tensioner, 45K. At least that's been the "collective wisdom" from the Rennlist E-Mail lists since I can remember.

If it's the same belt, I'm with you! I just wouldn't go with a no-name.

Continental makes high-quality rubber. Remember- they have to comply with super-strict German TUV safety/durability standards. Gates Rubber, UK also produces the OEM belt. They are the only two brands I would bother strapping into my car...
