Default Stripping a sunroof

How much "meat" is there in a stock sunroof ? With my helmet on, I have very little clearance and was wondering about finding a cheap sunroof and stripping the liner out fro track use.

Could I also get rid of the front latches ? That whole ridge comes really close to my helmet, and it seems like there is no way for the roof to come off even without those latches.

I know that Ashly&Hilary's 951 race car's is bolted in and the liner is removed- It's a permanent deal though- the sunroof/ body lines have been filled in on the roof.

Thought about getting a "race only" extra sunroof with the interior stripped out?

These photos might help. The manual sunroof has less reinforcement and the front pad area is narrower.

Another option is removing your seat and replacing the seat bolster area with a thinner high density foam; bet you could pick up 3/4"-1" that way.

That one of the power roof isn't so good, but could be retaken.

You know, maybe we should ask John D to set up a gallery area for just pictures of parts for reference. What do you all think about that?

Excellent idea Michael. I could fill a whole gallery myself with my "Wall of Shame" photos to scare everyone in doing something the right way. That's the one thing that's odd about uploading pictures...where do they go after we link them? There's no way to go back to them.

How much padding is there on the main flat part fo the sunroof ? Will I gain a lot of clearance ?

I was thinking of stripping one out for the track, so it doesn't have to be pretty.

The "padding" on the main flat area is pretty thin, 1/4" I'd guess. It's not really padded, more of a high density stuff like the door panels and glued directly to the vinyl. If you're that tall you really should look into replacing the seat platform, it can be removed without removing the side bolsters. Memory foam would work great over 1/2" high density poly.
