Cup wheels are 55mm offset. You would need spacers.

I have a set of aftermarket Frank Hartmann wheels with the spacers built in. I love them! Mine's an 86 and has the early offset:

I also have an '84 944 and needed no spacers on the 993 cup wheels. I purchased the after market wheels from Wheel Enhancement. They'll tell you what you need and have an excellent selection. I also had them mount some Yokohamas on them.
