Inspection and emissions
Why is it that so many 944's seem to fail emissions during inspection? Is there a common problem with the cars, or is it just that the cars arent warm, or what?

Actually the emissions systems on these cars work remarkably well. I've owned both early and late cars, and the only time one didn't pass emissions was due to a bad O2 sensor.
On the first go-round (I had just brought the car from NJ to NC) the HC was WAY over the limits, but after I replaced the O2 sensor all readings were BETTER than those of a new car. This was with a totally stock car. The next year I had the car tested I had installed a test pipe, and had replaced the DME and AFM with parts from an '86. Plus, the DME had an AutoThority chip, and the car still passed.
My '87 NA passed with a custom chip (every thing else is stock), and my 951 passed with Guru chips, 3.0 BAR FRP, and a Reliaboost MBC.
From what I seen in threads on the subject, a majority of the cars that fail emissions are either severely neglected, or have been heavily modified and were not properly tuned.
