what do you think about going from md-sf-la-md? i can give you one hell of a road itinerary that you would love, including the pch, rocy mountian ntl park, grand canyon, and some amazing twisties all around. not a borring road the whole way out.

My 968 now has 100K miles and a complete restoration will soon be complete setting the odometer back to zero, and ready for me to put the miles on.

Soon after I bought my 968 I drove from my home in Florida to Colorado, then onto Los Angeles, and then back to Colorado and across the northern part of the US and down to Washington DC, and then back to Florida. I put about 10K miles on that summer in about 6 weeks. Wore out my rear tires on the way west, and replaced both rears and fronts when back in Florida. The 968 behaved perfectly.

I would not make that trip unless I was driving a car I trusted mechanically. Also, you have to consider the price of tires in the cost of your trip.

Below is a photo of me on that cross country Porsche Trip - July 4 in Vail Colorado. It actually snowed on July 4 in Vail !!! First and last time my 968 ever touched the stuff.

Harry,
I thought of you last week in Morro Bay. For 2 mornings my wife and I would hit this Expresso joint and there would be a 912, same color as yours, could be your evil twin! Once we saw the older blue Calif. plates we knew it was someone else. Down and back Hwy. 1 in 3 days was like a blast from the past except I was driving a Dorkmobile last time. About taking the P-cars for a longer trip, every owner is the best judge of how roadworthy their car is; if you can't drive it why own it?

morro bay is cool. it could have been me if it was around august 2nd or 3rd. i always stop there to eat before i head up 1 to the bay.

i would love to do the coast all the way up to washington. maybe some day.

btw.. i highly recomend 58 from bakersfield to SLO. awsome twisties, fast twisties, real tight slow twisties.. all kinds of twisties! and there is nothing out there but fields, oil wells, and mountians. great stuff.

Yeah Harry,
58 is a killer road. I took it for the 1st time as a short cut to Bakersfield. Unfortunately I had a 1/2 ton pick-up loaded with 1-1/8" plywood all the way to the top of the bed...can you say understeer? I've done it in the Miata but never either of the P-cars. You were long gone from Morro Bay by last week. I hope you took Hwy.1 instead of 101...great place to scare the tourists!

I havent mate the full circle tour (yet- Maine to Fla to SoCal to Fairbamks and back) but I would need 4 or more weeks.

The longer trips I have done in the 924S:
Illinois to Hershey, PA and back. (Dropped from the cat back on this trip!)
Illinois to 944fest (Mansfield) and back (Alternator belt)
Illinois to Colorado Springs, CO and back. (PS belt, PS Pump went)
Lake Michigan Circle tour. (Upper rad hose)
Il to NYC I-80 the whole way and back. -Uneventful!

Thousands of 4 hour and less each way trips. The miles bring me smiles.

Whats so cool about Hwy. 1 is when you finally work your way to the front and get to pass that last idiot that brakes every 3 seconds, the road is yours until you catch up with the next idiot group miles and miles down the road. Glad to see you enjoyed our better routes...everyone who likes to drive has to do this trip at least once. I've done from BC to SF several times. Hwy 50 across Nevada is unbelievable, just the run to the top of Wheeler Peak @ 11,000' near Lehman Caverns is worth the drive across the whole state. Your album looks like a trip of a lifetime!

oh it was! that 1st trip was the best. i did a southern route this year and didnt enjoy it as much. next year im gonna do the exact same route as the 1st year.

hwy1 is an awsome drivers road, but to be honest, i didnt hate getting stuck behind campers, infact i liked it better than taking it hard (like i got to this year). its worth it even if you go slow, because the scenery is so awe inspiring. if you go hard you have to pay attention to the road, and where youre going at all times. if youre going 20 mph behind a camper, you can actually look at the sceenery a little bit.

"big wheel turns by the grace of god
small wheel turns round by the fire and rod
Every time that wheel turns round -bound to cover just a little more ground."

i think Walt Whitman summed it all up when he wrote

Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road,
Healthy, free, the world before me,
The long brown path before me leading wherever I choose.

Henceforth I ask not good-fortune, I myself am good-fortune,
Henceforth I whimper no more, postpone no more, need nothing,
Done with indoor complaints, libraries, querulous criticisms,
Strong and content I travel the open road.
