I prefer hand tools but there are something that air is invaluable for. Removing lug nuts is one, the crossmember bolts are another, stuck exhaust bolts (with air the crossover on a 951 would not be that bad), etc. I still start everything by hand but there is something to be said for air, which is why I will be adding it soon.

Scott, my last Ingersol Rand lasted me 10 years and the only reason I bought another one is because I use my impact so much that weight and noise became a major factor. Maybe I am getting older and lugging a heavy 1/2 inch impact under the car gets too tiring after a while. Also, the low rpm thumping sound of my old gun penetrates the insulation material of my garage door more than the higher pitch sound of my new IR gun. I heard genuine Chicago Pneumatics work well. I have no experience with snap on or mac air tools though I use their hand tools.

If your garage is near your laundry room like my house, one option on a 220v compressor is to do what I did. I simply built an extension cord out of heavy gauged wiring, and put standard 220v plugs on the ends. Now when I want to run my compressor, I just unplug the dryer, and plug in my extension cord. This method also doubles as my power source for my MIG, which seems to work out pretty nicely, as I'm not tied to a wall outlet, so I get more portability from the welder.

The key is to use some very heavy gauged wiring, as you don't want to overheat your extension cord and turn it into a fire hazzard.

The only drawback to my method is that the wifey gets a bit ticked off when she can't dry clothes

I have 110 and 220 in my garage installed to code along with metal tubing and proper circuit breakers in the box. I am not sure whether extension cords are legal depending on the length when it comes to a "permanent" installation.

dont know if someone posted this or not, but make sure the one you get has the right plug to fit your outlet.
