I really don't have the money for a "high quality cat"... I just need to get inspected now so that I am not screwed over if I get in an accident...

just check e-bay. do a search for "converter" in the auto parts section . all you need to know is what the in and out diameters of your pipe is .

I think before I leave I am just going to give it a try doing everything I can without the cat. I am going to heat up the car REAL good before I bring it. I'm going to put new sparkplugs in the day before inspection, going to clean out throttle body maybe would that help?

Someone today told me that I can probably take the air bypass screw completely out of the AFM and that will help my emissions a great deal? Anyone know?

Thanks.

If you're high on all counts, then it's usually your cat. As noted above, if you pull an injector wire, you should pass (I've never tried this, myself). Your oil would have no impact.

What about pulling the (edit) mixture screw?

Just freakin pull an injector wire if you need it through now and try it. I promise it'll pass. You can then worry about the problem later. IT'S A FREE FIX!!

I think its better to buy a $150 cat installed than to half *** the thing pulling injector wire, removing idle screw, or air bypass screw. Your car will run improperly and maybe even cause damage to your motor.

High HC and NOx is a sure sign the cat is bad. There's no way to make any kind of adjustments with fuel or air or air-fuel mixtures that will lower both of them. They are inverse functions of each other, that is, if you lower HC, you'll get hgher NOx. Conversely, if you tune for lower NOx, you'll get higher HC.

Okay guys. last question. Should I buy a piece of property in Connecticut so I can have no emissions testing?

(kidding)

I will try to find a generic cat at my local parts store that will work.... Anyone know what the pipe diameter is on both sides of teh cat?

Because of the free retest, try one thing that can lower both some (mostly NOX though). Like I said in the chat room, yank the cover plug and richen with the mixture screw until it runs funny, then turn it back a little. If it doesn't work, you're required to get a cat. Sorry Devon.

Well, I just went and bought a universal catalytic converter for 60.00 at my local car parts store. It's some Clean Air brand or something. I'll have my dad weld this sucker in there, and i should pass right? Might need some extra 2.5 inch pipe though because this one is about half the length of stock one. Why is the stock one so damn big?

Edit - Oh yeah, which way on the mixture school is rich? Clockwise, counterclockwise?

Get out your 5mm allen key and turn it clockwise after removing the plug with two small 1/8" holes and needlenose pliers.
