Question...
I just bought an 87 944na, and it has a Porsche radar dectector mounted under the dash, but your right knee. The snesor is up front mounted to the lower valence. It seems to go off quite often, and has high/low volume, and high/low sensitivity. I did not realize that Porsche made one...And is it any good?

Thanks

Radar detectors are great and all, but they dont protect you for squat from a bird in the air with a stopwatch. My dad's last FIVE speeding tickets were from airborne surveillance. Ohio is notorious for birds in the sky which is why I dont bother with a detector. Everywhere you go in Ohio, theres hash marks along the highway for birds to clock you through.

As an air traffic controller, I regularly work with Highway Patrol in the sky. An open sunroof is your best defense. An eye to the sky quickly spots a C172 orbiting at 2500ft. You just need to include it in your scan! All aircraft maneuvering near a highway catch my attention.

i am (apparently) such a wuss. dang.

sucks about the planes, but it's good to know, since i have relatives in ohio and visit there sometimes- how do they ID the car from up there? just a really long lens on the camera, or what?

I'm not sure what cameras they are using in Norway, but in the UK they are now using less RADAR GATSOs and more of the new digital TRUVELO cameras, which this website says Valentine won't detect.

It seems good for most other things, but $400 is an awful lot of cash to stump up. I'm really in two minds whether to get one or not (and i'll be moving back to UK next year to complicate things), but i think i'll probably stick to keeping my eyes open and having a bit of luck on my side!

elvisizer-

The airborne cops just radio down to the state trooper parked about a half mile down from the timed trap, then he pulls you over and on the ticket they'll indicate you were clocked by "air".

I agree Dan on the open sunroof. As soon as I see smal single engine overhead wing planes flying under the clouds, I slow down. I also slow down whenever I see the hash marks. Since the hashes are based on a timed clocking over distance, if Im not sure if I was flying through that trap or not I'll slow down REAAAAL slow before I get to the end hash to hosed up the timing. So I might have been doing 90 at the first hash, but 40 at the last hash, and so perhaps I average 65 which is the speed limit.

Of course doing 90 I will cover more distance quickly, leaving a shorter distance to achieve 40mph to affect the average, but we're splitting hairs.

or in the case of a laser jammer which continually emmits light in the same wavelength as the laser , causing the laser gun to recieve irregular signals, and giving incorrect speeds. thus rendering the laser gun useless against the far superior speeding bandit.

you see, the people breaking the law are always one step ahead of the people trying to enforce it. just ask any olympic swimmer, runner, biker, and lance armstrong.

i think i may paint my car with a black paint that absorbs all light emmitted on the laser wavelength the cops use. that way they will never tell how fast i am going....

Do you have cops doing radar in the UAE?

There is the perfect excuse. Someone must have been operating a laser jammer that caused the cop to have a false reading. Hoorray, no more speeding tickets for anyone.

As for the "bear in the air" ID'ing cars, it is not that hard. He's on the radio talking to the ground troops, and he says "See the yellow corvette in the left lane next to the red semi.. I've got him timed at 82" and ID is made. I bet a white sedan in a pack of white sedans would get overlooked. I wonder if any 944s ever got away with something because the guy on the ground was looking for a "red Mazda RX7"??? and never saw one?

Speeding without a good radar detector just because the police use other forms of monitoring is like having sex without protection because it's only 98% (or whatever the label says) safe.

You can argue that there's still a 2% risk (instant on, planes, etc.) so why bother. Only all the other 98% times it would've worked for you, and when you get caught you wish you had used it. I learned this the hard way.

I would go with a V1 or an escort. I have a buddy who is a cop, and he said that VERY FEW radar/laser detectors actually work. He said there are a few out there that work, like the V1 or escort, but thats about it.
