Default Once, twice, three times a failed wheel bearing

I had a great day yesterday. There was a solo-only track day at roebling, so I showed up, along with 2 other cars...I had wide open track 95% of the time, like my own private race course, like a dream!

Anyway, I get back and that left rear wheel bearing is making its characteristic sound, wub-wub-wub. It's not suprising that that one is the bad one (since 7/9 turns at the track are rights), but what kills me is that this is the third failure.

I had it fail fall '01 after a few track events and had an independent fix it.

The after almost all street miles about 18 mos. later, it failed again, (the axle nut had come loose) and I fixed it myself with parts from paragon and a new axle nut.

Now, after only 10 months and all of 7K street miles and one day at the track, I am in the same position. I have not checked it out yet to see the condition of the nut, but I am at a loss about why it continues to fail.

What should I do this time? swap the hub when the bearing is replaced? Do nothing and just tighten the axle nut back up?(assuming it's only loose again) Is the Left coming loose simply because the wheel turns against the nut and it ain't tight enough?

thanks for all opinions. I am still glad I got to run yesterday, even though it may be costing a bit more than I thought.

Jason... I'm not sure of how you went about getting your bearings inserted into the trailing arm but I've wondered if the use-big-hammer method was really doing damage to the new bearing. Just a theory. You might take the time to clean up the removed bearing this time and check for surface damage.

A little lock tight on the left axle nut solved this problem for me (if that didn't work, I was thinking a little spot weld would be soooo easy...jk)....Bruce

I have not been additionally packing it, since the rear is a sealed unit. I also used a press on the bearing and was not abusive to it going in, no hammers. I was desiring a spot weld, too, better not.

There are varying qualities of bearings available. At least that's what I found when shopping for mine. I went with an SKF bearing, because I recognize the name. I hope I don't have to do them again real soon, but the job wasn't nearly as bad as I'd feared.

If you are having frequent bearing failures it might be a good idea to replace the hub, shouldnt be too much more money and I bet you dont want to have to do it again.

Replace the stub axle. It's undersize where the inner bearing races rest.

I think that the stub axle could also be the culprit, any idea the price on these??

Can't you get a good used one from Partsheaven? Might be worth a try anyway. Maybe Oklahoma Foreign would have one too.
