Ok, here is my story...

One day I turned onto my street and out of nowhere there was a Ferrari 355 parked outside one of my neighbors houses. After a few hours of drooling over it to myself I decided it was necessary to go take some pictures of it, incase it wasn't around the next day. I knocked on my neighbors door and introduced myself (this was at age 16). When I asked if it would be alright to take a few pictures, he immediately offered to take me for a ride. What a ride it was! Not only did he take it right up to 130+ mph, he then slammed on the massive brakes (he upgraded the front brakes to F50 brakes and the rears to F40 brakes - wow!) and I felt as though I was going to shoot straight through the windshield. This was my first ride in a fast car, let alone a Ferrari, so I was definitely stunned. The more my neighbor and I talked the more he introduced me to the world of fast cars. On the passenger seat of the car had been an F1 magazine with a picture of the F1 car braking, the brakes glowing red. He told me all about F1 and Ferraris, and from there on I was hooked as a Ferrari fan.

So how does this relate to Porsche? Well, a few weeks later the same neighbor offered to let me drive his Porsche 928S. Taking him up on the offer, I was thrilled to be behind the wheel of a Porsche. When I told him about my prom coming up and how important my date was, he, being the most generous person ever, offered to let me borrow the car for prom weekend! Having the car to myself for a few days I got a chance to really feel comfortable behind the wheel. At this point I told myself I was going to own a fast car someday, but how could I ever wait so long?

A few weeks passed and my neighbor and I were casually discussing some of the new car knowledge I had learned from reading one of his magazines. HERE IS WHERE IT ALL BEGINS. My neighbor began telling me about an affordable Porsche. Affordable Porsche?!?! This was the day I learned about how affordable, fast, and sporty a Porsche 944 Turbo was. I searched the Internet for months, which turned into years, and finally in February of my freshmen year in college I found the one: my Badass951.

Started saving money for a sports car my first year of highschool. Finally bought my first 944 my senior year. Tracked it for the first time that summer...haven't looked back since.

Competitive racing has always been my ultimate goal so I needed a sportscar to start learning on. The wonderful thing about porsches is that they are halfway built to be a trackcar right out of the box. I remember almost getting a Camaro SS (way hot car when they came out) but realized how much work it would be to get it track ready.

My next sports car is either a Boxster Coupe or an Elise - then onto real racecars. Either way I'll probably keep my current 944. I have a feeling that Porsche is going to make a lot of money from me over the years

Oh boy. Some good stories.

Almost as long as I can remember (I'm almost 44 and my memory isn't going... yet) I've been a Porsche fan. I've wanted a 944 since I saw the first pre-production photo sometime in 1982 (or perhaps even late 1981).

In the mid 80s when I got out of college I started racing karts and a 944 was still what I wanted, but not in the cards given my racing.

Jump ahead to 2001. I had been looking around casually for about a year for a platform to build into a race car. I had a short list as follows:

1) 240Z - currently a winning platform and always wanted one
2) Sentra SE-R - a platform I am intimately familiar with
3) 944 - always wanted one and never dreamed I'd find one for a race car
4) 1st gen RX-7 - that and the 911 are the two most developed race cars in history

I passed up examples of 1 and 4 for various reasons. They just didn't feel right, although the 240Z shell I passed on was probably a really good one, but the price ($1,500) was a little high for a shell in rough shape, even though it was complete and pretty much rust free.

Jump to late 2001 and I was in a friend's shop at his father's bone yard. At lunch I wandered around to look at the 240Z shells. They were horrible so I wandered around a bit more and my friend wandered over and we talked about the various interesting cars there. In the middle of a conversation I spotted the 944 and made a bee-line for it. It looked tired, but it turned out to be straight and complete. My friend knew nothing of the condition beyond what could be seen. To make a long story short, I made a deal for the car. A hell of a deal. When I told my wife she had just come back from shopping and I laid the bomb on her... "Honey, I found my race car." Her face got a funny look for a half-second and then she instantly said "OK!" (what a great wife).

So, we brought it home and it turned out to be in better shape than it looked at first glance. Now it's about 2/3 of the way to becoming a race car and the worst is already done. The goal is to be on the track this year.

Finding Rennlist made it possible for me to really attack this with confidence. And The Greaseslingers have been a godsend, even though we havne't actually worked on mine yet (oh, we will). I've learned a LOT working on other people's cars so far and will be able to attack mine with even more confidence.

And so.... my first race car is also my first Porsche. Now that I've become intimately familiar with them, I think a 944 road car is in my future somewhere as well.

Same reason as everyone else here.

Because I want to score with the ladies, and the rabbi took my father a bit too literal when he said keep the tip!

So, like many others here, I liked fast cars, and being an american boy - that meant I liked various Mustangs, Camaros, Trans Ams and the like. I never thought I would own something like a Porsche. Too exotic, a car for rich people and I am but a simple country bumpkin. So one night, a little over three years ago, I'm in an internet chat with a 16 year old kid who is looking for advice on what his first car should be, can't be a true sport or muscle car because his family wouldn't go for it, and he doesn't have much money. So, I advice him on an older Celica, or a Ford Probe, something like that and we start passing around links to cars that are for sale. Another friend joins in the chat and things get kind of off topic, links to Ferraris, and even a McClaren F1... and then some links to Porsches. Except that some of the ads/links are for 944s - which, while I never really considered owning a Porsche, was by far my favorit body style. Now it just happens that I'm also kind of in the market for a car. Both my wife and my cars had over 150K miles (one a Camry and the other an Escort GT) and were needing replaced, we'd just bought my wife a new Jetta and she loves it. I can't afford another new car, but the Jetta seems pretty nice, so I am thinking of getting a ~4 year old Jetta. But then the links to 944s for sale and I am shocked - these cars are cheaper then the Jetta with comparable miles on 'em. Right then I decided I was getting a 944. Found out there are two kinds of 944s, those that were treated like Porsches and those that were treated like, "Dude, this car is f*ckin' fast man, you got drive it, and its a great chick car man, but like the bolts are like f*ckin $8 just for a bolt, f*ck that" - well my search ended with a beautiful, obssesed over '87 944 Turbo. Found rennlist shortly there after, I think I'll be here and driving Porsche's for life. I wrecked that '87 Turbo after 2.5 years and 50K miles and thought I didn't deserve to own a Porsche, but after driving a Celica for a couple of months I decided, Porsche - There is NO substitute! (hence the current 968).
So, I wish I'd paid more attention to these wonderful cars earlier in life like so many of you much smarter folks, but hey, I'm catching up in my love for Porsche

gonna keep this short. The price was right, the test drive was better. Knew the entire history of the car as my dad bought it new; my brother drove it for a few years after. Its never been abused, and until me always dealer serviced. (I service it now)
