You will have to pull the rotors to get to the parking brake shoes, they are inside there. Thread a bolt into one of the holes to help push the rotor/hub off.

My 83 rear wheel bearings have made everything from intermittent screeching noises, to loud humming, to grinding, to thumping, when they've gone bad. Truly difficult to pin down by sound. Every time I thought it was the CVs, it was the bearings. If you raise the rear end of the car and grab the rear wheel that is suspect, is there any lateral play at all? That would be the best indication.

Nope, no play. I've never had thumping with them, but have had everything else.

And the culprit was...the parking brake. I finally decided to pull the hub off, someone that rode with me said the sound was coming from the driver's side. So I pulled the hub and the spring that holds the parking brake shoes horizontaly had come off. In several places it was worn down to almost nothing from rubbing on the hub. So pulled a spring from the parts car, put it back together and no sound. Thanks guys!
