Default Motor mount replacement hell... I mean help?

OK
I am replacing my motor mounts on my 87 944S. I have the old mounts out and the new ones in the cross member and I have the cross member bolted back up in place. When I lower the engine (I have a jack under the oil pan) the drivers side mount does not seem to line up. I have the square rubber lip of the motor mount squeezed up into the little lip in the cross member so that isn't it. It looks almost as if the engine is too far over (closer to the passenger side) causing this mis alignement. The passenger side motor mount sorta lines up. I have one bolt started in it. Any suggestions?

Ugh...I went through the same crap when replacing my mounts. From what I remember, because they both face inward (towards the center of the engine), I had to get them both in as best I could with the bolts in the top of the mounts kind of at a weird angle, I had the crossmember not bolted in yet, held up with one jack, and I had to jack the motor up and down about 5 or 6 times, each time removing the mounts and replacing them, until on my last try I was able to get them to align and they worked fine. I don't know if that makes much sense...it is hard for me to visualize it now since it was kind of traumatic and I wanted to purge that experience from my memory. I love the motor mounts on my MR2...about a billion times better engineered. HTH,

OK the engine had shifted slightly to the side and with a small amount of prying the drivers side mount popped right into place. I will say this the car feels a HELL of a lot better now. I am ASTOUNDED at how much better it idles, all most like a new car.

Did you use the original Porsche mounts or the generic ones? I heard that the originals are the best and last longer. I'll be doing that same job on my car later on this year.

Your engine is actually cocked-over to one side...thanx to the splines of the torque tube. Get the motor back up another 2-3" and reposition the crossmember mounting points threading two starter bolts diagonally, to mark the crossmember anchor points. Use paint, or similar marking method, to affix proper alignment of this in the future. Even if the engine brackets and the rubber mounts are off slightly(by less than 1") ...start a long 13mm head bolt at the motor, aiming the threads inside
mount, with a floor jack under the unsecured crossmember, and the engine still suspended- carefully thread the bolt in drawing the motor slowly closer to it. Once this is done the rest is cake.

It's completely interesting to revisit an old post trying to figure out what you did in a simialr situation.

Here I am two years later doing motor mounts in my 951 this time and GOOD GOD I have the EXACT same situation. The stupid drivers side motor mount is not fitting correctly. It is 11:00 pm and I have been at this since this morning and I am giving up for tonight. Back at it in the morning.

I replaced the motor mounts on my 968 DD on Wed night, what a job to attempt by yourself. My passenger side mount was completely broken and the car was about to vibrate itself to death. I used OEM mounts, hope I don't have to ever do it again.

I had the same issue. I'd replaced mounts before without any problems. The last time I decided to remove both mounts and then install the two new mounts rather then finish one side before starting on the other side. I think my engine shifted and I had a heck of a time getting the bolts to line up. Matt H. came over and helped me get the driver side in. I finally got the passenger side in by replacing the bolts with a couple studs which helped line everything up. I later went back and replaced the studs with the regular bolts.

I did it twice before without ANY trouble. My suggestion is take your time, do one at a time (my last mistake), and you can finish both in an afternoon.

Is there anything that can go horribly wrong when installing motor mounts? Or any special tools needed?

I was going to do this soon too, and I'm not sure I want to do it anymore! Then again I'm poor, I already have the parts and tools, and summer (free time) is coming up. In the summer, it's a little fun to get stumped and challenged, even if it gets you mad at the time.
