85/1 Clutch Fails to completely disengage
My 944's clutch gave out on me while auto crossing recently. When I push the pedal to (thru) the floor the engine speed does not fall and shifting is hell. If I push the clutch and throttle at the same time, the engine will rev normally. The problem ranges with engine speed, being almost unnoticeable at idle, to simply awful after 4000rpm. There is a rather disconcerting noise (which I can’t describe) when “engine-braking” with the clutch in that disappears when the clutch pedal is released. As long as I have owned the car (<1yr) the clutch has made a sharp “clack” when quickly released with the gearbox in neutral. I bled the line to the slave cylinder, but I don't think it helped.
Any ideas?
Also: If anyone in the Atlanta area is interested in finding a new car buddy, I could sure use some help.

somethings definatly messed up down there, like beer burner said it could be the disk, or a number of other things. look up through the inspection hole in the bell housing, or take off the slave cylinder and see if you can see anything messed up. if not, id say its time for a new clutch. if you do see something wrong than its also time for a new one.

Three Wheelin'
I had a similar problem. It ended with 2 inches of the pressure plate side of the disc coming loose and locking up in there. At that point I could not push the pedal at all. The car would go but I could not disengage the clutch to stop!
I suggest you get a look inside the bell housing and repair this hopefully before expensive parts get damaged.

Look for rubber chunks in the inspection port. The old rubber center clutch has a built in "last ditch" before total failure. It was totally metallic and would clunk like you're describing. Either way, looks like you're headed for some clutch work.
