Had it down to 1080kg dry weight. A bit heavier now due to some added stuff including a real battery.

Gearing is a funny thing.... the 968 did have odd gearing- the reason for adding an extra gear, whether going from 3-sp to 4-sp OR 6-sp to 7-sp are two-fold- you want closer gearing & a slightly taller TOP gear w/no holes. Shorter gearing is faster- gears are multipliers- the shorter the gear, the faster the acceleration- a shorter gear is higher numerically- a 4.0 1st w/3.0 FD (Final Drive) is 12.0 OR (Overall Ratio)- you would multiply your TQ by 12 in 1st. A 3.0 1st w/the 3.0 FD would be 9.0 OR- you would multiply your TQ by 9 in 1st- obviously 12 times would be more, so, the shorter gear multiplies more TQ to the ground- it's like starting off in the granny gear on a MTN bike vs starting off in the 1st cog on the 2nd chainring... of course, traction becomes an issue in lower gears, PLUS, the amount of time spent shifting becomes a prob if it's TOO close- it would be counterproductive if you had to shift 10 times before crossing the 1/4 mile...

The gearing is about right w/the HP & TQ of the 944 Turbo S, except 5th COULD be slightly taller. Much >300RWHP/TQ though, & I would really want taller....several people here are trying dif 5ths- an S2 5th w/951 FD would give ~181mph redline. An early 944 5th would give ~192mph- it ALL depends on WHERE you are driving the car...

The Turbo S tested in C&D had a shorter FD (~3.65 IIRC)- the car redlined 5th @ ~145...13.9 @ 1/4 & 0-60 was 5.5- UNchanged b/c while they WERE acclerating faster, they had to grab 3rd BEFORE 60mph.

Too bad Porsche didn't set the 968 gearing slightly closer than 951, BUT, w/slightly taller top gear, to have the best of both worlds- 6th could have come in ~180 & STILL had closer evenly spaced gears all teh way up. But, they made the gears really close & left 6th even SHORTER than the 951 5th- most assume 6-speeds are for REALLY high speed driving, etc, but, it's more often done to get closer gearing...

The late '80's 911 Turbos WERE a 4-sp as has been mentioned- 4th gear redlined ~183- there were holes in that gearing- I always wondered why they didn't at LEAST get a 5-sp- they already had 6-sp in the 959 years earlier...

The 968 6-sp DOES weigh more- I doubt it's more than ~20lbs- it's supposed to be beefier- it's definately stronger, although I'm NOT sure about the gears themselves(?)- the 968 engine IS lighter & the heavier transaxle combines for it's better weight dist: ~49/51 vs 951's ~51/49. It's interesting that the 968 got such short gearing when you consider that it incorporated the Vario Cam, AND, it's larger disp w/more low-end TQ, AND, it was NA (much quicker response).

I think the ultimate would be the 968 6-sp tranny w/custom gears- redlines for stock 968 are about:
1st- 40, 2nd- 63, 3rd- 88, 4th- 114, 5th- 139, 6th- 155.

The stock 951 is about:
1st- 40, 2nd- 67, 3rd- 99, 4th- 134, 5th- 167.

I would like to have >400RWHP/TQ w/:
1st- 40, 2nd- 63, 3rd- 100, 4th, 138, 5th- 175, 6th- 210.
...this way I wouldn't have to replace 2nd, saving $- 1st is supposed to be impossible to change anyway (according to Powerhaus II). Really though, my dream would be slightly taller b/c I would want dif sized wheels- 17x8 front w/245/40/17 & 18x10 rear w/285/35/18....

Well, I've written MY book for the evening.... I hope this helped someone out there in some way...

:-)
