Exclamation HELP!!! Gauge Cluster is POSSESSED!

This morning I had the hugest streak of bad luck hit my car!!

First of all, the temperature gauge is faulty and you have to smack the dash just above the gauge to get a good reading. If anyone knows how to fix that please reply to this also.

Second of all. I get gas this morning, trip the odometer (which was working perfectly fine before) and notice that 1.2 miles on my trip also shows as 12 miles on the regular odometer, meaning that my regular odometer's units digit is reading like the tenths on the trip! Then, it goes kaput!!!!!

HELP! If anyone in California knows an odometer and gauge cluster repair shop that works on 944s please let me know asap, i want this fixed within 2 weeks and how the hell do you remove the gauge cluster from the car????? Has anyone ever done this? I've done it on my 84 before and I don't know how to do it on the later ones...

Please help..

Andy

I'm sure UPS or Fedex will have it there in a day for you.

To remove the guage cluster - take the steering wheel off and get all the visible screws out. There are 3 in the vents I think. Make sure they don't fall in the vents. After that, just take the cluster out and unhook the 3 harnesses. Very easy indeed, should only take 20 minutes, max.

Send it to me, I'll exorcise it and dispose of it appropriately.

Default Socket

That sounds about right, but I don't know off hand. Now, my $0.02 on the cluster. I have taken mine out numerous times and if you didn't know, there are no moving parts. Basically there are 3 big plugs that run the gauges. The plugs themselves have been known to have 2 problems. The first is the clips that hold the plugs tight. If they get brittle, they break and you may get partial disengagement. It may just be a simple repair. The second is, I have heard that the contacts get corroded, unplug the three big plugs and clean the contacts and reconnect, that may do it. If not Autobahn in El Cajon has a lot of parted 944's...

ok guys here's the update. I talked to a guy who will come by Wednesday and fix the odometer. He's contracted by Pioneer Centres to do gauge work on all 80's cars that come in with speedometer/odometer issues. Perhaps he can fix my faulty temperature gauge too. The bill's going to be about 170. Wish us luck!

Did you know you can't zero the odometer while the car is moving? I very much doubt your specialist is going to have the replacement gear you'll need, if that's the case. One of the vendors here sells them.

what do you mean "zero" the odometer? And this guy worked on my 84's busted odo. he has also done many late model cars. I'm noy a DIY-er when it comes to odometer problems and I refuse to touch the mechanics of my gauge cluster since I don't know how to work on them

I meant zero the trip meter. Can't do it while the car is moving.

You said you tripped the odometer. I'm assuming you meant you zeroed the trip meter? Was the car moving at the time

The car wasn't moving. I was parked at the gas station pump. After I tripped it, filled up, the car started reading 1.2 miles as 12 miles on the regular odometer and just completely stopped after that. Definitely self-destructed itself.
