Default Ticking behind the Dash

My car has developed a random tick that seems to originate from behind/under the passenger side dash. Can't tell whether it's mechanical, electrical or plastic rubbing together. Seem to hear it mostly at idle. I think it goes away when I accellerate. Looked underneath and can't see anything.

This thread had a similar issue and folks thought it was the climate control system. Anyone have any idea what it's doing and how I'd fix it? Thanks!

I'm bumping this question because I noticed it again today (90 and humid!) It must not be a big deal because I first noticed it 3 years ago and everything still works, but I'd still like to know what it is. Here are the clues:

- Notice it more on hot, humid days
- Sounds like an electrical click, and occurs with AC on or off
- Seems to be coming from the dash, behind the cigarette lighter

Any ideas? Thanks!

perhaps a ploy to get Porsche owners to stop smoking?

Mine does the same thing. It occurs mostly during idle immediately after start up and is worse when it is hot out. My guess was that something was loose and that it only manifests itself when the dash is hot from the sun potentially expanded from the heat. It goes away fairly quickly after the car has been running a few minutes.

SAME HERE!
Mine started after the car sat for 8 months. I think it's a relay kicking the bucket. If you put your hand under the dash, almost against the console, just behind the vinyl covered section there is a brace for the dash. See if you can feel the click there. There is some kind of relay mounted immediately above there, no idea what it's for, and that is what is going out on mine.

I can't draw any similarities about when mine clicks except that it only happens when cold outside. It clicks with the heat on or off, A/C on or off, idle or accelerating, etc, etc, but again, only when cold outside. Let us know if you find what your problem is, otherwise I plan to look at mine in July when I have some time off work, since everything seems to work anyways.

Bumping this one up. Ive had this annoying click last summer.. went away over the winter. Came back this summer and is getting really bad. I thought it was something loose with the glove box but noticed just now it only happens with the key on. Defenetley sounds like the climate control sensor. Going to remove the glove box and see how cleaning whatever contacts are behind there. At idle if i wiggle the dash with my hand it clicks, if i go over bumps it clicks, and it clicks at certain RPM ranges... drives me nuts.

Whether or not i successfully remove the plastic trim piece without breaking it will be a challenge.. but well worth stopping the damn clicking.

I was curious however.. does anyone know if i can simply disconnect whatever is behind there permanently?

Add me to the list of clickers, only happens for about 20 seconds when I first turn the key though.

Happens here too! It didn't do it last summer, but this summer it has just started all of a sudden. A fix would be very nice!

My 968 does this as well. There are two solenoids for the dash vents behind the glove box. The PO on my car replaced those and fixed the malfunction for awhile. Unfortunately, the problem came back and the only other solution I know of is to replace the $$climate control$$ unit...

+1 on the clicking. Mine just started doing this and it does it without the HVAC on. Anyone have any ideas?

As per some older posts, if you turn the temperature **** so its a little hotter than 18 degrees celcius, then it does not click nearly as bad. When i had it left on full cold it would click constantly if there was any kind of vibration (rough roads and certain RPM ranges).

I am going to pull the glove box out sometime soon to see if cleaning the contacts on the solenoids works at all.

Agreed on moving the temp just a little bit off of full cold. I've also found that moving the the sliders just off of the left hand stop works to alleviate the noise a bit as well. Funny, none of my first three 944 variants did this...
