Default Upgrade to 6-blade fans

SoCal mentioned this a while ago but I can't find the thread now. . .

What are the ramifications of changing from the early (three-blade) fan setup to the later (six-blade) fan setup? AFIK the assemblies are the exact same size and the six-blade fans run quieter and blow more air (this is why I'm considering it for the turbo project). I think SoCal mentioned that the amperage of the later (six-blade) fans was slightly higher, but I'm wondering if anyone has done this and what kind of results you had. I don't want to be blowing fuses on my cooling fan circuit with a hot turbo under the hood!

I have 3 extra if anyones interested.

As far as adding them to a early car, they do pull slightly more, but I think that you can still run them. I have sold several of them for folks to upgrade, and as far as I know, they just bolted them in. It would be best to splice the the different plugs in though. There is sometimes a clearance issue, but if you just put them in your original shroud and change the plugs, you should be ok.

I replaced a 3 blade fan with a 6 blade fan on my 83. Only problem was I had to flatten out the molded connector to fit. I just zip tied it down. Clearance was adequate. It did seem to me to move more air.

I'll look tonight or tomorrow to check what the amperage of that circuit is; anyone know offhand? How about on the later cars since that's where those fans come anyhow? Are the circuit ratings different?

I've put the double 6 bladed fans on both of my cars. I love it. Yeah, I have noticed on my '83, that is appears to draw down a little more on the car (with both running), but nothing drastic. I've never put an ammeter on them either. But, I've only got a little over 1K miles on it with them in there. Plug and play, just watch the lower radiator hose doesn't make contact with the fan on that side. If it does, shorten the waterpump side of hose a little more to gain some clearance.

I thought that it was FR Wilk that stated that.. anywhoooo

Whoever it was they stated that the 6 blade setup combined with a LOWER temp theristat would solve most cooling problem ( assuming nothings broke )

I've been wondering about this too, seems like some time in my car's past one of the fans has been replaced. I have one 6 blade and one 3 blade. Guess I'll keep my eye out for another 6 and balance things out.\

Did the upgrade. Very easy. Used the original shroud with no clearance problem. Did not notice any drop/difference in electrical load (have not "metered" it)

The other thing that made about as much difference for mine was....

~~~~~~~Let the debate begin about this~~~~~~~
...installing the under tray. It DID make MINE run cooler. It forces the fans to draw the air THROUGH the radiator, not from under and behind it.
tod84944 above mentions he has a few six-blade setups; I PM-ed him about one, maybe you could score one from him also.
Got your pm. I have one set in a shroud ready to go and I have just one more single. I also have a good 3 blade. The price I sent you also inlcudes the "flat" connectors that you will need to splice in. Just make sure that you get the wires tight against the shroud so they won't get in the steering pump belt or the fans themselves.
