This leak started 3-4 weeks ago. I'm going to get it fixed ASAP, but it may take a bit before it gets into the shop. Not that I plan on driving the car any great lengths, but is there any reason the belt should be weakened enough to not risk it?

Ok, so I decided to dig again under there and pull back the timing belt cover a tad and see if the belt is oil soaked. It appears nice and dry. It also seems that the oil is seeping from between the belt cover and engine. Main seal? Thoughts? Expensive?

Hmmm....that looks alot like my new oil leak too. I am first checking the lower balance shaft o-ring because when I installed it - it felt loose, even slightly folding over. Oil will gush out as the motor is run. The procedure for diagnosing this car is as follows:
CHECK:
1) balance shafts (upper-lower)
2) oil/water intercooler
3) Oil pan
4) oil pump
Let us know what transpires...

The bulk of the leak ended up being the mainshaft seal, but the balance shaft seal was beginning to leak, too. Either way, it's fixed and my wallet is lighter.
I really need to get that tensioner tool...

Don't overlook the oil cooler housing. Mine was leaking pretty badly, about a half a quart every 300 miles, and with the airflow under the car the oil wen't every where. Made it hard to see where it was coming from untill I cleaned it off and checked.
Just a thought,

Yes, the pan gasket tends to leak at the area where exhaust heat can accelerate gasket deterioration. After my complete rebuild of an 83' motor- I went ahead and continued using the heat shield that comes with 1985.5-up 944s. All I had to do was redrill the shield bolt opening by 1mm.
Other places where leaks are common, are the oil pump sealing surface, and lower balance shaft housing+ rubber O-ring , and shaft seal. Be sure to use the correct sealant- because this can make or break....the airtight integrity of your engine.
