Default OT - Car Registration.. how long till I have to?

I bought my 89 range rover almost a month ago. Was going to go try to register it tomorrow morning but realized I can't because it's not insured yet. (or i think i can't without insurance). How long do you have legally to register the car after a purchase? What happens if you do it later than that date? fines? Only if they catch you wiht the car on your property or on the road unregistered?

Thanks.

I believe that you only have to register it before you put it on the streets. You still have to let the DMV know that you have the vehicle and you still have to pay taxes on it though (I don't know the time frame, maybe a month?). This has been my experience in ga with motorcycles, so it might not apply to your situation.

30 days in Illinois, until your tags expire elsewhere.

If it's not in "driveable condition" , but a restoration project it can sit for years unlicensed.. YMMV- It really depends on local/ state statutes.

... and your ability to hide it..

Keep an undated "bill of sale" handy just in case Devon.

Where I live, as long as the car is parked on your property, it doesn't have to have tags on it. If you live in a neighborhood that has an Homeowners Assosiation, there may be a covenant against having an unused/unregistered vehicle sitting in your driveway. If in the garage, then you have nothing to worry about (at least in my neighborhood, since a guy up the street has a tube framed dragster in his garage).

Ditto. What DMV doesn't know won't hurt you.

In Louisiana they collect taxes (based on the sales price) with the new buyer registration. After 30 days there is a penalty added for late payment of these taxes.

You can do the title transfer w/o registering the vehicle. At least in Fla you can.

Hey Devon, Pat here. One thing that all the other responders overlooked is that you live in Rhode Island. Probably the most crooked, money grubbing state in the US of A.

So imagine my surprise when I went to register my 951 several months after I bought it, and they jacked me a penalty of 10% of the sales tax because I didn't register it within 30 days of purchase.

From their website:
http://www.dmv.state.ri.us/registration/tax.php

>>>>>>>>>
"Sales tax in the State of Rhode Island must be paid at the time of registration. If you are registering a vehicle that you purchased from a dealer, the sales tax is 7% of the purchase price, minus trade-in and other allowances.

· If you purchase a vehicle from a private party and the vehicle is seven (7) years old or newer, you will pay sales tax based on 7% of the NADA book value (blue book) of the vehicle.

· If a vehicle has been given to you as a gift from an immediate family member, you will not have to pay sales tax on the vehicle.

· You must pay sales tax on your vehicle even if you do not register the vehicle.

· Sales tax must be paid by the 20th day of the month following the month of purchase. For example:

· Bill of sale date is February 1st. You have until March 20th to pay your sales tax even if you do not register the vehicle.

· After that date, interest and penalty on the original tax will begin to accrue. <<<<<<<<<<<<

So what the state really wants is their sales tax. Which is paid when you register it. And the sales tax is due shortly after purchase, possibly as soon as 20 days. There seems to be no rule regarding how long a car can go without registering, as long as the sales tax is paid...

Hope this helps. I learned the hard way...

Pat

Rules are different in different states.

Funny story about my 83 944.
I bought it in Feb/March 2003 or so. Tags had expired on the car, but it ran. Our plans were to us it for parts we loaded it on my race trailer and took it home. We let it sit for a while. In about april 2004 we had found the car to be in good enough shape to street drive. So then I got a 3 day temp tag to take the car to emissions. Passed just fine and headed to the DMV to title transfer & registration.

Well registration only problem was it I had a title from Previos PO and last registraion from a couple years ago. The DMV lady said there would be a fine if I was late in getting the title done. Well she also said there was NO way to verify the sale date of the car it could have been last week. So last week it was!

Also on my 88 924S parts car I got the title transfered right away, but applied for "Title only" as I have no intention of street driving that mess.

Bottomline... Get the title transfered and try to NOT register the car.
