I'm trying to figure out whats the best way to do this...
Should I have the owner of the car send the title in the mail, than I register and insure it so everythings legit, or is there another way around it?
Or can I pick up the car having the signed title, but what about the plates, and all?

someone has to trust someone. so..
you could send him the money, then he sends you the title, then you go to the dmv and get temp plates with the title (and insurance), then you go to pick up the car with your temp plates
or..
he sends you the title first and you pay him when you arrive, but i believe you need a bill of sale when you come to the dmv to register the car and get the temp plates, so they can tax you, so there you go.
i think

Go to the local DMV of the state you are purchasing the vehicle and you can purchase a temporary plate for the vehicle after you purchase it. You'll need the title but in my situation they didn't take the title as I wasn't registering it, just getting a temp. plate. It cost like under $20. And of course get the car insured before leaving.

You will not pay tax in the state you're getting the temporary plate, assuming this is not your home state, you will pay that when you register the vehicle in you home state. You'll just pay for the temporary plate.
Anyway, that's how it worked for me.

Only problem is I need the title to insure it, and register it locally.
I don't really consider it a trust problem, I'm just trying to find the best way to achieve it.

i didn't know you could get a temporary plate in the state you buy the car from.. i guess it makes sense that you can, but what i was saying was to go to your own states dmv with the title/bill of sale/insurance card and register the car with them. you'll get temp plates right away and real plates in the mail.

Ok, I'm confused.
I thought the title, and bill of sale were the same exact thing, or is this usually based on the state? When I last insured and registered my car, it all came under one sheet of paper.
Would borrowing dealer plates work as well?

I went thru this..
What state are you buying from? Gettin temp tags is EASIEST, just show the title and bill of sale and they will give you temp tags and you can drive on them until you get your real registration. Only thing is, you have to be insured already even if its for anohter car or if you are under someone elses insurance. Other way is just get title/bill of sale and register the car normally and then throw your regis/plates on and drive it like any other car you own

if the title has a place on the back to write in a bill of sale, with purchase price and seller information then I think the DMV will accept it as a bill of sale. for insurance, you should be able to insure yourself and the car with simply a vin #.. go to geico.com, they dont ask for anything else... or like GOBOGIE said, i think if you are already insured then that is good enough for the DMV, just give them your policy #.
so... insure yourself, get the title filled out by the seller, go to the dmv and get your temp plates, and stick them on the car and drive. righto?

NJ is pretty harsh when it comes down to insurance.
My insurance company doesn't allow to insure a vehicle without the title.
But I have to find a way to pull some strings.

When I bought the S2, I gave my ins. co. the VIN and they said I would be covered. I tossed the plates from the 85.5 and the registration in my travel bag, and flew out to Denver with a cashier's check. The seller signed the title over to me, I put the plates I brought with me on the car and drove it home.
I called the local license bureau and was told that I had 30 days to register the car after I bought it.

Picking up my 968 in NJ last spring I:
1. insured the car based on the VIN
2. Drove up and got the car and drove home on the previous owner's tags, with bill of sale in hand/glovebox
3. Went to NC DMV with proof of insurance, NJ title, and bill of sale
4. Paid NC DMV a bunch of money
and got new plate and title
5. Mailed the old tags back to NJ
No problem.
The guy who bought my S2 did the same from Indiana.
