Hi All, new to the boards and i'm a lil frightened :P
my name's Matt,
I've got an '84 911 that I purchased this past spring from a fellow in southern alberta, I've been tinkering and toying with it since. I used to have a MINT 1974 911S Targa but due to an unfortunate accident, I was forced to part with her and stick to driving an rx-7 for this past winter.
The car is stripped minus a driver's seat, console and dash. Even the carpeting and sound proofing, I plan on eventually track racing her. It's been on jackstands for a week now, it started with me sourcing a t-stat fan problem to now removing my a/c and such... they're very easy to work on compared to the 911's
I'll see you in the forums.. and look forward to answering my questions as I have many!

Welcome Matt!
don't you mean an '84 944?
they are very fun cars, and not too tough to work on - i'm glad to see you aren't scared to wrench on it yourself! if you need any parts, there are a ton of us rennlisters parting cars out (myself included) so if you need anything don't hesitate to ask. those of us not affiliated with a company can most likely give you better prices though.
welcome, good luck, and please,

the ONLY pic I have of her. The bra is there to cover the unsightly rock chips on the front, as well as that ugly scuff you can surely see, the foglights have also since been replaced
I'm not afraid to wrench on my car at all, the way I see it is I make about $20/hr and can't really justify having some tech do it for $90/hr. If it takes me three times as long to do his work, I'm still ahead of the game!
but since we're talkin about parts here.. maybe you can look at the question i asked about a/c deletion and perhaps you have a bracket for an alternator from a car NOT equipped with a/c? one can only wish

oh yes.. those rims were in absolutely HORRIBLE shape when I got them, 20 yrs of annodization and curb rash resulted in disaster.. it took me 6 hrs a piece to hand-sand them back to perfection, 220, 300, 400, 600, 800, then 1000.. all wet-sanded so that's why it took forever.. some polish.. some new black paint and blam they're like new

I dunno man, the rock chips would have to be pretty bad to look worse than that bra.
Show your road wounds with pride! The rest of the paint looks pretty good!

Ooh, what kind of paint did you use on your rims? Mine are rather...discolored.
Welcome! I don't bite...much.

I took simple green automotive cleaner, but ANY good degreaser will do, I scrubbed and pressure washed the crap outta the tire/rim inside and outside, did each side about 3 times to get er clean.
I bought the large 8"x8" sheets of the following grit - 220 (dry sanded the entire rim. I wrapped the paper around the rope to get the "lip" in the middle there, and a screwdriver to get around the valve stem
This took the longest, I did the outside lip, the inside 1/2.. then the other 1/2, in total about 5 hrs/rim
I used 300 (wet sanding ~ had a 1L spray bottle on-hand to continue spraying) everything that the 220 touched, going in a constant side to side motion to smooth out the deep cuts the 220 made.
Then onto the 400, wet sanding as well, just to smooth the 300.
I then took and washed the rim again, simple green and scrubbed.. to get any excess sanding paper residue or other dirt in the air that might have got on it.
Once I dried the rim, I went onto wet sanding with 600, followed by 800.. then a real quick and smooth with 1000. I then used this "Blue Magic" metal polish to hide the scratches and bring out a nice nice shine, there is a WORLD of difference between the two, it killed my entire weekend but it was worth it i have some before/after pics that are up-close if you need the motivation hehe
