Default Another temp gauge problem

OK this is weird, I did do a search and couldn't find any problem like mine.

When I get on the freeway (constant speed, 65mph) my temp gauge continues to climb slowly all the way to the red. When I get off the freeway and stop (engine still running) the gauge goes slowly back down.

Any ideas? grounds?

Hard to put the plugs into the later fans the wrong way. The early fans have bare terminals so it is possible to wire them backwards.

Do you have a thermostat in the water pump? When the coolent circulates too fast it does not have time to dump it's heat through the radiator. Also the same problem if the thermostat closes. It may be in backwards. Then it just may be a sticky thermostat that is not opening all the way.

Another problem is running too lean. The AFS could be out of adjustment or one of the critical temp sensors may be acting up.

So when did this start happening? Have you done any work, or had someone else work on the car?

This sure sounds like the fans are running backwards....

I had the thermostat replaced three times about 2 months ago, finally got one from the dealer. Everything worked ok. The hose running to the heater control valve broke and I over heated about 3 weeks ago, ever since then I've had the problem.

Could I have damaged the thermostat when the vehicle over heated?

I'm having a hard time understanding why the vehicle gets hotter whilst driving and starts to cool when idling. I thought it should be the other way round.

I'm going to try and trouble shoot this tomorrow, any ideas or suggested testing routes to take?

Blown head gasket? Do you have to keep adding coolent? Do you know how to do a proper cooling system bleed?

Coolant level stays the same, no fouling of the spark plugs, good compression and yes the system has been bled.

I'm starting to think it's the radiator.

I just checked the fans and they are sucking air throw the radiator.

Problem is getting increasingly worse, today on the drive home I had to turn the heat on to stop it going into the red.

Not fun driving with the heat on when the outside temp is over 100.

I take it you are running the AC. Both of the fans should come on at full or high speed when you turn on the AC.

Yes I was running the AC until the gauge almost hit the red, then I shut the AC off and turned the heat on.
